New Homestead Act

http://dorgan.senate.gov/legislation...mesteadact.cfm

I just heard about this on PBS Nightly Business report and did a quick search.

I haven't yet read through it but thought I'd post it here anyway.

I signed up for the email updates. I'll take the write off for student loans and any grants I can get to start/expand my business.

The original Homestead Act provided for a claim on 160 acres. To claim the land you had to stake the boundaries, erect a cabin or a house, improve the land(usually by planting a crop), & live on the land for 5yrs. Here in Oklahoma, several million acres were claimed from 1889 untill 1893. Many of our most promonent citizens started as Homesteaders & became rich. E.K.Gaylord came here & staked a claim on a few city lots in what would become OKC & started a newspaper. In 50yrs he had a strangle-hold on Oklahoma, & was a multi-millionair. The Gaylord fortune is based on free land & double-dealing.
