What is it?

This is on my property, it's about 25 feet round. It is obviously some kind of kiln or fire pit, but I was wondering if anybody thought it served a specific purpose.

the walls are about 6 feet tall at the entrance, there is a hill behind the fire bricks and the metal back there is only about 2 feet tall.

I think some exploratory excavation is in order before deciding what it was.

Are the fire bricks even related to the structure? Could that be the base of a grain bin? We have a circular structure in the ground on our farm that I was trying to figure out and finally found someone who remembers there was a silo at that spot.

the bricks on the bottom are real firebricks, the red bricks appear to be some sort of chimney. they are hollow with about a 6" open in the middle.

I do not know if the firebricks are related to the structure, there is another pile of firebricks just outside of the circle.

It is not a silo, it was built not to terribly long ago, I can tell from the wood used, also it more of an oblong shape than a circle.

I assume it is just an area to burn stuff, but I don't really see an evidence of a burn pile, though it has been sitting not used for at least 2 years.

I also think maybe the person who lived here was a scout leader and his son a boy scout. Perhaps this is related?

Looks like an unfinished project.... Maybe a boy scout project but it's not finished.

Makes me think someone started an area for composting and after it had piled up, someone else (or same person) made an area where fire would be easier to control if not done correctly... Just my impression

That was my first thought, that it was a kid's project.

Some same thoughts as well! I'm thinking the bricks have nothing to do with the wall at all. Just some kid playing and making a fort or something out of the bricks. Are the walls made out of 2 X 4's and steel siding? It might just be someones big compost bin and kids started playing inside.

Perhaps they planned on camping there and using the walls as a shield/wind break?

Yep, I think nc is on to it, its just a bit of a windbreak where the boys sat around a campfire and sang "'ole McDonnell had a farm".

Cheers........Skul

I would only spend a couple of minutes with a metal detector to rule out it being a "left over" from something else and then I would begin exploratory excavations with a shovel. It sure looks like a super duper composter to me....couple of two foot deep holes would answer that one.

I don;t think the bricks have anything to do with the walls which appear to be a base for something like a bin or tank.

Yes they are. the thing that boggles my mind the most is the back of it has very obviously been made into a hill, and the bricks are kind of built into it. The wall back there is only about 2 feet tall. It is very obviously shaped with the hill in mind. It is not the remnants of a building, it was obviuosly shaped and built like this for a reason. May not have been a logical reason, but a reason nonetheless.

I do plan to dig it out and get rid of all the weeds, but I have about 650,000 other things to do first. Will update with some pics when I get to that part.
