Snake control

I live rural and always have known there are snakes here. Dont see them often but know they are around. Now a snake bite has killed one of my beloved pets. Other than keeping grass low and rubbish cleaned up what is a good solution to not have snakes. A neighbor said sprinkle sulfer and moth balls around and it runs the snakes. I have 2 outdoor cats and they should help. any good solutions out there. Does the Snake Away that is available work?

Our neighbor across the road uses the Snake Away and says it work well. We just put moth balls around the house. We have rattle snakes here, so we're going to go ahead and get our dogs all immunized against bites this year.

We try and keep limbs picked up (we have a bunch of willow trees that shed constantly) and our huge lawn area mowed, but the two rattlers we saw last year were right out in the open, one in the lawn and one in the garden.

Guineas are death to snakes. They will kill and eat every smaller snake they can find and if you have enough of them they will attack and kill even larger snakes. Even if you just have a few they will alert you to the presence of larger snakes so you can come out and dispatch them. They stand in a circle around the snake and scream their fool heads off.

Get rid of the food. No rodents no rattlers. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean you don't have rodents.

Isn't it a little early in the year for snakes?

That's the problem with guineas, i.e. they scream their fool heads off. We've had them before and they were really good about wandering over to the neighbor's property and screaming over there. I'd love to have some again, but I really like having a decent relationship with the neighbors too!

That's good to know, as I've always hated the smell of them around the foundation of the house! But, I felt I had to do it, because everyone suggested it.

Chickens will also kill snakes. They are from India where cobras slither about. They will peck at little snakes. I don't know what they would do with a big snake, but I imagine they would go after them as well. Rhode Island Reds are quite aggressive.

My chickens have been zero help at deterring snakes.
I couldnt tell you how many times I have found black snakes in my nesting boxes-
even eating eggs right out from under broody hens.

Also, there is a vaccination against snake bite? I never heard of that.

How about you keep your cats inside and spare the local bird population? I bet if the cardinals and blue jays could be on this forum, they would be posting about how to keep the cats away because they killed one of their family members.

If you live in or around Eastland, you ARE going to have snakes. That is just a given. Keeping things clean, mown, and controling rodent population will help to cut down on the numbers, but there are so many out there that they are going to push eachother into unoccupied spaces. Be vigilant and aware.

How about learning more about them so you are less fearful of them. Most rarely bite unless provoked.

Two of our dogs have been bitten by copperheads, and survived. Just take their collars off, so when their head/neck swell up they won't choke to death. After 3-4 days you couldn't tell they were ever bitten.

Keeping grass cut low helps considerably, as in the the tall grass they're predators. In the short grass they're prey.

No, but there have been some studies done that show electrical shock from stun guns helps neutralize the venom.

There are antivenom injections for humans for AFTER you're bitten, but it's VERY expensive, and most places don't have it on hand

None of the "snake repellents" do anything at all

...............Eastland will have Cotton mouth , Coral and rattlers ! The further west you go the less you'll encounter the coral snake ! Road runners kill and eat snakes as well . Coral snakes like warm , moist , shady places to rest during the heat of the day , wood piles are a perfect habitat in this regard . So , investigate any of the above situations close to your home ! Rattle snake venom is more toxic than coral snake venom . Also , Donot kill any NON venomous snakes around your home as they will also kill rat and mouse populations thereby removing a food source for rattlers and corals . , fordy
