Since I hate building fences

Thought this was interesting...

http://www.fastcodesign.com/1671913/...ences-obsolete

I love technology, but wonder how it would really work on a large scale, especially with goats

ROFLOL Not even remotely feasible. We have a small herd of about 150 that lease our land every year. Those things would be rubbed off on the first tree they came too...or at least broken beyond repair.

It isn't going to keep predators out, even if it keeps animals in. With a fence, you at least have some hope of keeping things out

Since they're discussing it in the context of the west which still has lots and lots of open range, it wouldn't keep other folks stock out of your grazing lands either. Out here, you fence it out or it's your problem.

If I hadn't pulled the link I'd a thought it was some Japaneese invention---kind of like the modern toilet that flushes or blow out a kiss of fragrance, pretty much everything 'cept bleach your backside. Or the robots for every occasion.

I suspect, if we want to talk of being obsolete, the gps/radio cattle collar will only be around until they've fine tuned that lab designed test tube meat I read of a few years back.

Oh yeah, I could see our little nigies in a set up like that! Well, for about five minutes, maybe...

Not on goats...they would have found a way THROUGH Hadrian's wall.

I grew up with range cows ... the kind that jumped fences if they saw someone on foot. I can see someone trying to put that kind of a rig on one of them ... but definitely not a job I'd have volunteered for even in my young wild west days.

And these sensors could be found when the cow was at the bottom of a canyon how? in a place where you can't get a cell phone to work?

It would be fun to watch the computer experts put them on those wild cows! I wonder how much that is going to add to the cost of beef?

I thought the same thing Molly. I've never had cows myself but my Grandparents and uncles did. I've chased plenty of cows that got out over my lifetime. Not many of those would let you walk up and pet them, much less long enough to strap something onto their heads.

............I have an even better idea........ You can install a 'Crapper Flapper' over the cows rearend that will collect all the methane gas in a small tank hung under their belly ! When said cow needs to take a dump the Flapper will be spring loaded with a hinge such the flapper will simply open every time an El Dumpo is necessary . The Flapper will have to be adjusted so that the cow's Arse doesn't get whacked and cause an accidential release of methane .
............Additionally , the methane can be used to power a small generator to recharge the batteries on the location device . Excess methane can be transferred to a large holding tank at Farm Boy Bills main ranch headquarters . Farting doggies aren't cool ! , lol , fordy

I'm not so sure I want some radio frequency that close to my cow's brain. I don't even like wireless in the house and won't let the girls use a cell phone - I imagine what kind of waves would be pumping through the livestock.

Never thought of that! I certainly wouldn't want to cause my goats to get any weirder than they already are. As it is, I'm sure certain lines are brain damaged!
