Anyone from Versailles/Stover MO area?

Hello,

I found a couple of properties of interest from the Versailles/Stover area. Is anyone from around that area? What is it like living there? How are the people? How harsh are the summers and winters? How high is unemployment and what employment opportunities are there?

Thank you,

QuietInTheLand

I don't live there but have been there several times as that is where my longarm quilt machine is from and gets serviced. Couple of nice quilt shops too

It appears to have some industry in the area, numerous businesses, car dealers, restaurants, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versailles,_Missouri

It also has an Amish/Mennonite community and one of my favorite markets http://www.weaverscountrymarket.com/

This looks to be the area newspaper http://www.vernonpublishing.com/

And you may be able to ask some questions here http://www.topix.com/city/versailles-mo

Hope you find what you are looking for. Blessings!

I have a niece that is a teacher close by, and that is also where I bought a longarm machine.

I agree about Weaver's store! Also at that location are the Martin brothers, they do an excellent job shoeing horses and mules. We have a mule that is touchy about her hind leg, and they have no problem with her. I've been to the Walmart there, and the farm and home store, oh, and there is a Mennonite restaurant nearby that has excellent food at reasonable prices. I don't get there often, as we are in Linn, Missouri, and we have a nice Mennonite store in town, now. Good Luck with your decision!

The people are nice in general. There are two old order mennonite churches (wengman) and another congregation of holdeman. So there are many meno stores and restaraunts. Like everywhere else the weather seems to be changing. The area has been in a moderate to severe drought for the past two years. Many of the people commute to jobs

Just warning they don't pronounce it the way the French do, it is more literal. I drove through there on the way to college about 50 times never stopped there, never had a reason to though.

A lot of Mennonites in the area-beef cattle/dairy farms & some crop farms-Mennonites have several stores in the area or sell from home-

Not a lot in the area as far as jobs, most people commute to work to Jefferson City or Sedalia-

Pretty good ground in most that area-

People are fairly nice in the area & pretty down to earth-

Weather can be so-so-sometimes winters are just winter & can get snow & cold & summer can get hot like last year but its not like that every year~

Good luck with your adventure if you decide on the area~

Thanks everyone! I'll make some plans to head out to that area in the next month or so.

Two last questions: How are taxes out there, and does anyone know a good, but inexpensive place to stay when we visit?

Thanks,

How are taxes out there? They are super low. Missouri state taxes are some of the lowest in the country. Property taxes are county based. I am not sure about that county in particular, but was looking at tax sales in the area recently. Taxes were less than $100 for most properties.
