Pipe thread dope

I am replacing a natural gas starter box for my fireplace and need to know what type thread dope to use. ie: I assume a High temp thread sealant but have no idea what temp to get. Do I get sealant that sets up hard? etc. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Thats a thread seal for gas lines, that is what you want right? Not a hi temp silicone?

Look form yellow teflon tape.. It's a double density PTFE tape meant specifically for gas pipe.
copperkid3 and Gianni like this.

Rectorseal # 5 has been the standard for gas lines for the last 50 years, with teflon tape a close second. It should not set up hard nor do you want a pipe dope[lubricant] to dp so, just make it easier for the threads to interact.

Rectorseal # 5 Still the best. Just buy the small tube. And buy another when you need more, it will separate if you leave it in the tube for a real long time, IE: years. ( Don't ask how I know!)

The seperation topis just cutting oil and can be stirred back in with the brush in the can. When the brush no longer reaches the dope and you still have some left tap the edges of the can straight down with a hammer, collapsing the can to reach it.
