How Do Snakes dig Holes??
We've all seen snake holes in the ground..
How can a snake dig a hole to crawl into??

They take over an existing hole from the previous owner and many times eat the previous owner.

I used to think they wouldn't dig either. I dug up a corn snake this winter though when I was doing some work around my property. He went straight to the loosened soil and started burrowing back into the ground. So I guess you could say they "dig" if the soil is loose enough.

They hire it done. They hire an excavation and construction team of Mexican Mice, get the job done, then report the team to the authorities for illegal excavation, skip paying for the job, and their team pays the ultimate penalty during the holewarming party.

Some snakes do dig their own holes... I've watched a couple do it. I've seen a rattle snake burrow out the dirt under a rock...
They use their nose to start the hole, wiggling back and forth. They use their body and scales to move the dirt back... They just keep on working at it.... They aren't very efficient at it, but they do dig them..

They twist up into a corkscrew spin into the ground and bounce out with a lump of soil. Saw it when I was a kid in TV.

goodness.....now i'll dream about snakes digging all over my little homestead  Just BE CAREFUL around any snake because it was a "harmless rat snake" that took that chunk out of my arm last May right in the middle of my husband being on his death-bed! I am so horrified of snakes but I didn't have time to worry over that much but my arm turned black from my wrist to my elbow and the doc said the worst thing to worry about was infection....

I'd say mostly they don't dig their own holes except for the hognose snake species... they have a thickened upturned scale on their nose tip that they really do burrow quite actively with trying to find toads also dug into the soil. But a discreet tunnel with an opening that they use for regular cover for days or months, that'll be some other critter's initial creation. Even the hognose variety doesn't dig a tunnel and then hang out around it, to my knowledge.
