Outhouses
Has anyone ever heard of cutting the bottom off of a Porta Potty, putting over a 6ft hole and using it as an outhouse?

I guess I don't know why that wouldn't work, but personally, I'd rather have a wooden one. Takes almost nothing to put one up and they look a lot nicer...

simplist outhouse / or shedhouse..is to take a 5 gallon bucket, a bale of pet bedding, the shredded wood kind, and a camp toilet..
you put some of the pet bedding inside the 5 gallon bucket, set the camp toilet over top of it, and everytime you eliminate you toss a handful of the pet bedding over the mess until it is filled..and then dump it in a compost area.
you can line the 5 gallon bucket with a plastic bag if you want or put some newspaper or brown paper bags in the bottom to make it easier to empty
if it is at all smelly a can of wood ash kept nearby and sprinkled on will help that but if used properly it shouldn't be smelly

A neighbor did just that at his place. He is putting in a real indoor bathroom now but for two years he has used a porta potty over a hole. He does not even have walls around it. Just a piece of wicker screen in the summer time. I have not looked at it since that would be too nosy, but he says it works just fine.
We have two outhouses and they work fine. If you plan to use the out house for a long time, I would suggest wood walls and wood seat.

If you build your own you can get really creative. Who says they have to be plain ol and drab. Here are some examples.
Here are images of what you can do with them if you build your own.

I wish I had a photo of the one my ex and I built in WV. We used a sawdust toilet. We built the roof ridge extended about 5 feet past the door (cantilevered?), with board and batten building, an old 9 pane kitchen door and an window looking up the hill. It was right nice

Have used an outhouse that is actually looks like a toilet over the hole but you push a button and a tank drops water into the toilet and then push again and it opens and falls into the hole You don't actually see the hole while you are doing your business. More acceptable for the ladies as there is water in the toilet bowl. Had an old water tank on the roof that supplied the water.

Got a friend with one. He uses his post-hole auger on his tractor to drill a hole and then puts the porta potty over it.

We got a used porta a potty from AC&T and dh cut the bottom off and that's what we use. When I say the hole is too full, we move the port a potty, fill in the hole and move the john to the newly dug one. We've been doing it for five years now cause we don't have enough time to finish the bathroom in the cabin.
It's a little cold in the winter time but we don't live there. We are just there once a week to care for the livestock. Dh usually stays over night as he is remodeling some of our rental properties located near the farm. It works in West Virginia. but I can't stand going out in the middle of the night.

Outhouses are illegal here. The only folks I know who have set a port-a-potty over a hole are trying to fool the neighbors and the Health Department. Usually doesn't work for long.

Some people have one here. It is in an upper field that they keep their animals in and they are doing a lot of wood cutting and clearing in that area. They have bathrooms at the house.... just don't have to take a 10 minute walk to get there.

Well I might. I do know where one is. In my county it is Not legal to do it that way. So I need to not discuss the matter any further.
P.S. It works very well (so I am told).
