Hello from new member in GA!
Howdy y'all!
Just wanted to say hello and tell y'all a little about myself. I'm in southeast GA not far from sweet onion country and work as a corrections officer for the state. I'm married to a wonderful woman who is mostly understanding of my homesteading/self reliance leanings. lol! Right now we don't have any kids (wifey thing), but have recently decided to give it a try. Having kids is my idea and seeing as how I'm pushing 40 I hope it doesn't come back to bite me. We currently live in a really small house and tend a really small garden on roughly 48 acres of land that is 99% wooded. Of that, most is planted pines that are getting close to harvestable size with some good patches of hardwood as well. There is also a 3 acre pond stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Yeah, I got lots of work to look forward to!
I have only gotten into the homesteading idea in the last year or so and have been getting as many ideas as I can before really committing to anything yet. I have been putting in a small garden for the last few years with fairly good results. The wife's family always had/has a good garden so she is already very knowledgeable about canning and putting up food which is a plus. Future plans are to build a larger house on the property along with a shop, barn and some other outbuildings. I really want to get some critters as well, but the wife is kinda iffy on that point as she still likes to go places and doesn't want the bother of finding someone to tend to them.
Anyway, glad to meet y'all and hope I can offer some input as well as learn some new things!

Welcome, how bout some honeybees? You are in a very good location. There are a lot of honey bee producers in your area. They are not like most farm animals. They don't require constant care like other animals do. So you can still take trips to keep the wife happy.

Welcome! Maybe you can get your wife to join too and we can help "convert" her!

Thank y'all for the welcome!
johng, honeybees may be something I look at in the future. My FIL used to keep bees and would be a wealth of information. Trouble is, he's also worse than an ol' bear when it comes to honey! I may not be able to keep him away long enough to enjoy it myself!

Welcome JawjaBoy. My DH and I adopted our DS when I was 40, so I know what you mean in that department. Good luck on your homesteading endeavors.

Hello and welcome aboard! Sounds like you could learn a lot from your family, and I'm sure you can learn a lot more here on the forums. Good luck in the family-making area too. Have you considered foster care? As a corrections officer for the state, I would imagine you would have a good influence on some youngsters in need of love and guidance. Working alongside you and the wife at home, these youngsters could learn some invaluable lessons and be a big help to you in return.

Mine and my wife's families are probably going to be great sources of information. I especially like talking to her dad as he seems to have done it all at one time or another. Beekeeping, farming, raising quail, they used to make syrup and raised, butchered and cured pork as well. As for the fostering idea, we have thought about it and that will be a serious option in the event we don't have any luck ourselves. The biggest issue I have is that the rules governing fostering children can be ridiculous and are subject to the whims of the case worker. And I'm not what you would call a great supporter of the whole "big brother" system of government we seem to have these days.
