Crockpot...greatest invention of last century!

Got one for Christmas and it hasn't been turned off since. 2 days ago I made a corned beef in guinness beer, then after we ate it and all the gravy and veggie bits were left, I threw in some beef, beef stock, beer, carrots, celery, taters, garlic and onion and started it all over again. MMMMM the whole house smells of beef gravy!!!

Anybody do anything interesting with theirs?

I like country style ribs with sauerkraut in my crock pot!! That is my favorite. Also filling it up with boneless chicken breasts and then shredding it and you have a bunch of chicken for several meals. I couldn't live without my crockpot! I have 3 of them!

I just did salisbury steaks with onions and tomatoes. Cooked all day while I was at work. It just fell to pieces when I took it out, but with baked potatoes cooked in the microwave and then steamed to finish (noodles would have been good, too!) it was great. Very quickly put together, too.

I like to put a layer of carrots then a stuffed whole chicken, then cook all day. When I get home just open a can of cranberry sauce and dinner is ready.

I did a thread not too long ago on the Preserving the Harvest forum. I carmelized onions in the crock - there are step by step pictures showing how it went. They were really good! I did them outside. Here's a link:

I'm trying Crockpot Carmelized Onions today

The electric part is new, but the idea itself is very old.
They used to call it a 'hay box'.

Box+Hay+very hot pot of food+long time=dinner!!

They used it for long trips, picnics or for hot meals out in the field.

I like to toss in a cut-up fryer (rabbit or chicken) and a jar of salsa. Serve with fresh, hot rice & a vegetable - YUMMMM!

I just did beef tips and noodles. I cooked the cut up beef in broth and onions and garlic all day while I was at work. I thickened the broth and let it cook for another hour after I got home and than added noodles and cooked until they were done. My crock pot seems to return to an almost boiling tempature fairly quickly when set on high after you open it so it didn't take more than an hour after I added the noodles until it was ready - yummy! If you haven't used a crock pot before you might think me saying an hour for noodles is a long time but you have to understand that everytime you take the lid off it slows down the cooking quite a bit. I LOVE my crock pot! It is so nice to walk into the house when I am exhausted from work and smell something wonderful waiting for me!

Red beans, black beans, white beans, pinto beans, chili- yep we eat a lot of crock pot beans.
Throw in some beans, onions, celery, bay leaves, meat (smoked or pickle), in the morning. Dinner is ready when we get home from work.

our meijer store just had a great 2 day sale with some amazing meat prices..so I have just filled my freezer with beef, pork, chicken and fish..so my crockpot will be getting a workout with some of that too.. I do love my crockpot and my dishwasher (cause I hate washing crock pots and I have a great dishwasher !)

I used my crock pot a lot when I had a family to feed. Slow cooking was a great way to tenderize cheap cuts of meat, like round steak. One of our favorites was swiss steak made with round steak and salsa all day long in the crock pot. Added potatoes and carrots the last couple of hours too, because carrots always taste better cooked with beef. But there are no cheap cuts of meat anymore, it's just the two of us, and we are trying to eat less meat (especially red meats). So I don't use the crock pot much anymore. I enjoy reading what others do though.

Couldn't live without my crock pot or slow cooker either. I made chili in mine yesterday.
Love it for roasts either beef or venison
BBQ ribs with with BBQ sauce or sauerkraut
Rabbit with what every sauce I decide that day
Venison chops or steaks in mushroom soup
Made Bean soup in it last week

They have crock pot cook books out & I think you'd really Love them. Really unbelievable what you can make in a crockpot or slowcooker starting with breakfast thru dinner as well as appetizers, dips & desserts.

Did this a day or so ago.

Go get the UGLIEST chunk of pork you can find. Bone in, bone out, shoulder, fresh butt, whatever. Plop it in the crock pot in the early morning. Slather it with dijon mustard, and pack on a rind of brown sugar into the mustard. Slam on the lid and turn on low and GO AWAY! because the smell will just about hurt you it's so wonderful!

When you return, pull it out and slice, then drizzle your slices with the juices. My oh my, so tender and delicious, and really pretty cheap!

That was 90% of my cooking when I worked nights...use to put something in it before going to work or to bed...be ready when i got up or got home from work. I have 4 of them and use them constantly...The only thing we dont like in them is beans and apple butter

Crock pots are my BFF...that and the grill

I did a class at homemaker's one month and the whole dinner was made in different sizes of crock pots.....from the appetizer to dessert. And that was a yummy apple crisp/cobbler kind of thing with ice cream....Yummy!

Checked a couple of the cookbooks out at my local library....great ideas!

I love my crockpot, I have 3 huge ones. My problem it is only the two of us now. I just bought a 2 quart crockpot that is perfect for 2 people It is maybe 2 meals. The good thing is you can't keep expanding by throwing in more. It makes you quit so you don't have to eat the same thing for days. It works just like the big ones. $11 at Target and its made by CrockPot.
