Your favorite homesteading book?

I want to buy myself a good comprehensive book on homesteading that would hopefully take the place of several books (like canning, poultry, organic gardening books, etc.). What is your favorite?

I agree with Nancy, Carla Emery's book is very good and complete. I would also add any John Seymour books.

Do NOT buy "Grow it!"...ever. It's worse than useless.

Carla Emery's book is OK but it isn't as good as a combination of more specialized books. While I love what she did, a lot of the info is rather subjective as opposed to objective and accurate.

For example, the "How to grow more vegetables than you ever thought possible" book is a good starter for gardening, as is the Four Season Harvest by Eliot Coleman. For goats....I really like the books by Harvey Considine as well as the earlier editions of David Mackenzie's Goat Husbandry. "Stocking Up" is THE book for food preservation IMHO.

Yes, to Hollowdweller's books. Easy and simple to understand. Literally, used these in hand during our first few years of homesteading those many years ago...

Emery's encyclopedia may not be all encompassing, but it's pretty darn thorough. It even includes instructions for preparing the dead for burial.

I do not dispute the information contained in the Carla Emory book I own one. The best Book to buy and read before you use the information in that book is "Five Acres and Independence". If you do not know where you are going all the how to's will not help you.

Hollowdweller, you've just made me buy another book - the John Vivian one. Oh well, it can be one of my Christmas presents!

I agree with everyone Carla Emery's book and I love John Seymore's book for the wonderful information and illustrations. We are trying very hard to become as self sufficient as possible.

I'm a man, but outside of a strictly goat book I think that Country Women book has some of the best goat advice of any.
