The basic difference in operating temperature water cooled vs air cooled. Air cooled running hotter and the oil is formulated to perform at these temperatures.

I use a good quality marine grade 2 cycle oil (Mercury/OMC) in all my 2 cycle engines and haven't had any problems at all. My DB who worked for a Stihl dealer recommended Stihl oil for the Stihl chainsaw and weed eater, so to keep him happy, that is what I use in those.

For the most part if you need a 2 cycle oil any 2 cycle oil will work as long as it's got the properties for your engine, such as TC-W3, if the bottle says it meets those requirements then it'll work in your engine. If it doesn't then it won't. But, there are differences in how the oils are forumlated for the specific application. For instance an oil that's made specifically for water cooled outboards may have additives that help to prevent oil build up on the plugs which is common in that application. Also, and this one I don't understand. I bought a Stihl weedwacker last year with a 4 stroke engine, but you mix the oil with the gas. Go figure. In that case, since to me that seems to be pretty unique, I'm sticking with the Stihl oil, not to mention that if you buy a 6 pack of oil at the time you bought the weedwacker they give you an extended 4 year warranty on it.

There is a 10 year employee at WallWorld who is the kind of guy who fellow employees hate because he knows so.much.

He once told me he learned the hard way not to use Marine 2 stroke oil in saws and weeders.

Others have succeeded.. Mike didn't .
