Greensand filter questions.

Been doing a lot of reading, and it appears for the kind of water I have a greensand filter would be in our best interest.

I'm not quite sure I understand them completely though...

Is the potassium permanganate used every time it back flushes itself?

How much water does a back flush cycle use? Is that water just dumped out onto the ground, or will it run through your septic system?

Tell me anything you can that I would need to know? I'd be installing this system myself so the more I know before I go to buy, the better off I'll be...

I've read a lot, but hoping someone can let me know the ins and outs first hand..
