I am back with another question?
Sometime back I had a question and could not find the answer on the web, but someone did on HT, so will try again. I have a lot of trade cards and most are worth 2.00 to 40.00 or 50.00 maybe? But I have this one I would like to know the value of. These also came from Monticello, Iowa. This is from Red Wing Pottery and is an early trade card and I have not been able to find one or the value of one. Help would be appreciated.

Red Wing pottery began manufacture in 1865. There are 25 stars on the flag. The Union was composed of 25 states. The logo says "We are in it" like in the war?
BUT, the Union Stoneware name wasn't used until 1878.
A recent production where they got the facts wrong?

I've got to disagree, there were 32 or more stars on the flag during the Civil War.
So that rules out the Civil War as does the time Red Wing Pottery started. The Civil War "officially" ended April 9 1865.
How about from the Spanish - American war in 1898 or there about.

Sorry just thought of this..
If you notice the "20" at the top.. Maybe it is celebrating/commemorating the 20th Anniv. of the begining/end of the CW which would put it at 1881-1885.

I believe the "20" was the number of gallons of the crock the child is standing in.

There were actually three pottery companies in Red Wing, MN around the turn of the century (+/-).

There were three main companies that produced stoneware in Red Wing: Red Wing Stoneware (1877-1906), Minnesota Stoneware (1883-1906) and North Star Stoneware (1892-1896). A fouth major business that benefited from the clay pit deposits found in Red Wing was Red Wing Sewer Pipe Company (1891-1970s). Red Wing Stoneware and Minnesota Stoneware bought out North Star in 1896 shortly before they merged to become Red Wing Union Stoneware in 1906. They would later change their name to Red Wing Potteries, Inc. in 1936 when the company diversified their lines to include art pottery and dinnerware.

That would be one big crock.. But you may be correct, since they show a child standing in it..
Oh and a 20 gal crock would be heavier than .........200 lbs when full

I have no idea, these are photos I found on the internet. I am sure whoever owns them doesn't move them much.

LOL yes I know.. But the US flag at the start of the war had 34 stars (yea I had it wrong also..) because Kansas was added as a State in 1861. Then it gained another star when West Virgina ceded from Virgina and became a State in 1863, making it a 35 star Flag.. The Union (US) still counted the eleven Confederate States...

I know the history of Red Wing, I also have several items of R W. I think the dates are correct on 94-06. I can find and have some Union stoneware, but the problem is, have not been able to find a trade card like the one shown. It is a 20 gal. size crock, and they made crocks much larger than the 20 gal. for uses outside the home for special purposes. I know the trade cards was a way of advertisment (no internet) and I am sure there was lots of them, but not a lot of paper items survive, therefore I am having a hardtime finding this trade card. I have, in the past, gone to the R W Collectors Society and as questions and get an answer in a few days, but now they do not have, or I can't find it anymore where one can ask a question. Last time I purchased a Union R W ice water, 5 gal at an auction for less than a 100.00 and it brought 997.00 on ebay. If anyone can find a way to find this trade card, I would appreciate it.
