Earning a black-eye and playing with knives

Learning to live on a Homestead has it's ups and downs. Sometimes it is fun to look back with pleasure on the past. Today my sons's found an old photo of the youngest son. The photo was taken after he almost cut off his finger with a pocket knife. He had also earned himself a Black-eye earlier in the day.

While at the hospital, it took so long that the cut had already stuck together, the whole ER was a mess and so I said I was leaving. The hospital staff told me I could not leave which made me madder and more determined to leave! I drove back roads all the way home (which is mostly where we live anyway) just to be sure no one caught me with my still bleeding child.

It was a great day.

Yup, my youngest grandson jumped off the top bunk, hit his head on the drawers, and ended up at emergency --- for 4 hours. He was happy, talking, playing, bored out of his mind, and they were awfully tired. He had quit bleeding, and was doing well, so they went home. And the hospital turned them in to child protective services!! They hadn't "gotten help" for their kid, so child protective services got involved and they had to go through 2 months of inspections, questions, all kinds of stuff, even tho they took the kid to their own doctor the next day and had a letter from him that DGS was fine.
Scary.

Standing at a bar years ago, I thought the guy I was argueing with had hit me in the stomach. It wasn't until his face turned pale, and he looked down, did I realize he'd tried to stab me with a pocket knife that had folded over, nearly taking his finger off.

I laughed so hard I forgot to hit him.

Ozarks Tom: I sure hope you did not go back to that bar again!?

KIT.S: I was worried about that but they did not turn me in to anyone. The hospital did call me the next day to see if my child was OK.

My son was fine by the time we got home. The picture shows just how fine he was. I was a wreck however! He would not take the bandage off for days. It got so dirty and raggy that I was afraid his finger would fall off but it did not.

Kids are such fun!

Ha! That's a good one Silvercreek Farmer. We have only had a few broken bones here but lots of cuts and scrapes and bruises. Knock on wood. Funny thing about it is that I hate the sight of blood. Just cannot take it. So, my kids learned early on to help themselves and each other. They would still scream "MOM!" but also knew to run help each other since I was going to be nuts about the blood.

The best advice I ever got about hurt and injured or sick kids was from a pediatrician who told me that the louder the kid is screaming = the better it was. He said if a kid is very quiet, then you know they are very sick or in shock.

So - when my kids screamed their heads off, then I was fairly grateful.
