Tailgate stuck Advise needed

Yep I had a brain fart yesterday. Come from old age I guess, at leat that is what I am blaming it on. Went to get a load of manure staw mix. I put down a sheet of plastic. I thought I could just let the tail gat down on the pu and slide the stuff out. Well I shut the plastic in the latches. I had to cut it out to remove the sheet of plastic. The tailgate handle is one of those plastic ones and I believe I pulled too hard on it. The tail gate will not open. Should I pry the latches? This is a 2002 chevy full size silvarado. Thanks for any reply.

I hate it when that happens! Will any amount of really heavy leaning into the tailgate take enough pressure off the latches?

You don't have to pry it in such a way that it busts the latches and then your tailgate won't stay shut!

If you look along the inside edge of the tailgate, you'll see that the latch is like a little tooth. When you lift up on the handle, via cable action, it retracts and allows the tailgate to swing down. Probably you jacked up the cable, so take a big, long screwdriver and push it into the crack between the tailgate and truck, and manually push that latch in.

If you're lucky, like I was, the cable only broke on 1 side, and you still can lift the handle to free the other side. Otherwise, you may need to get someone to pry one side while you do the other, or use 2 screwdrivers and keep one wedged in place while you pop the other side.

Yes, you'll have to do this every time you want to open the tailgate (unless you want to replace the cable) but my 12-year-old truck has been like this for a long time and it's really not so bad once you get used to it! I leave the screwdriver right in the bed of the truck ... in fact I gave it a name, "The Magic Screwdriver."

Oh, one thing I should warn you about is this problem seems to make your tailgate more likely to fly open unexpectedly (it won't open when you want it to, but when you don't ,,,,,) so make sure you secure your loads or you'll end up picking stuff up out of the road. Once I was hauling a particle-board bookcase that I had just snagged out of someone's trash when my tailgate flipped, the bookcase slid out, hit the road and exploded into about 50 million pieces! Luckily I was driving at night on a rural road, so there were no cars behind me or anywhere around as I cleaned up the mess and beat feet outta Dodge!

BTW, I believe a busticated tailgate officially qualifies your ride as a "redneck truck."

What willow girl said! I've had to fix the tailgate on our truck when this happened...hubby was sure we'd have to take it to a shop and get a new tailgate!

I was fortunate in that one cable had just come loose and I was able to reconnect it.

the engineer that has made the modern latch system for both tail gates and door handles is going somewhere when they pass. they will be faced with an endless array of their product not working and have to spend eternity coping with busticated and frozen (those that do not have ice and snow can only imagine!) latches. never hurts to put a ratchet strap to make sure your tail gate is not going to spring open touring down the highway.

My older chevy has heavy wire latch connectors. All I have to do is reach under the handle and squeeze them together. I can do this with my fingers but if something were stuck in there I could use a channel lock pliers on it.

On a Ford what breaks is a little nylon piece that clips over both the rod that pulls the lock back and a rod that is attached to the pull handle. There are two of the clips - you access them from the metal plate that unscrews on the inside of the gate. For emergency opening you use the screwdriver method - it's a pain in the dark. New clips are about $8 each.

Slip a credit card in the side latches.

If that doesn't work, use the credit card at a dealership.

I wuz gonna suggest putting some heat on it to soften the plastic and open the gate while it's soft. Guess I'll save that idea for next time....

My Dh always undoes our beatup talgate with a heavy screw driver on the side of the tailgate where it latches to the sidepanel.
