In the spring and summer you can tell when a strong storm is approaching by watching how high birds fly. Some birds go really high an hour or so before the storm arrives.
In cold weather I watch for long streaky clouds, thats usually the direction a storm is coming from and in 2-3 days, wala.

If I smell sulphur fumes coming out of the ground I know a low pressure system will be here within 24 to 48 hours, that, or an earthquake.

A friend of mine put pictures on fb yesterday of 6 persimmons and they all had the spoon in them. I had never seen one so it was exciting to me. That means a lot of snow.

I am 72 and never saw as many acorns as this year, ever. That I always heard indicates a hard winter, sure hope not, getting $3.70 oil on Monday....

Birds flying high and erratic show that a big change in the weather is emminent.A reddish sundown means a nice day in the morning.

East wind usually precedes rain.
Don't laugh, but in the winter when my arthritis flares up in a joint to the point that I can barely use it, time to find the snow shovel and boots cause a heavy snow is on the way. Never saw it fail to happen.

I just bought a glass swan in Helen, Ga., that is a barometer like you described. Agree that there are lots of acorns, persimmons have the spoon shape, and tons of berries on my dogwoods. I am preparing for a cold, long winter!

This year the wooly bear catapillers (fuzzy and black with a brown band in the middle) are extra fuzzy and the brown band is narrower than normal. Hard winter comming. Woolly Bear Caterpillars Winter Weather Predictors
