I don' t get it? I thought Smurfs were blue? And why would anyone strangle them? Maybe it is a joke I missed?

That's Smurfette. When Nina was born we called her Smurfette because she was blue. Surgery to close a hole and fix a valve in her heart fixed her right up. No more Smurfette.
