wow, beautiful . . .

I dont know, but there were some big spideys in Va., when I lived there.
They were called garden orb spiders, or something.
They were beneficial to your garden (that's where I saw 'em, as well as the paths to the garden. . . .
that egg sac looks pretty full . . . . if that's what it is . . . .

Argiope aurantia - black and yellow garden spider - if you don't get caught in her web she won't eat you.

Yes, Black and Yellow Garden Spider. Will not hurt you or your horse. The round ball is her egg case. They are very beneficial spiders, catching lots of insects of all kinds, including flies.

Black and Yellow Garden Spiders ooor... Banana Spiders!

Golden Silk (Banana) Spiders

We have a good mixture of both here in Texas. They have a tendency to settle out in the barn or close to the house. We leave them alone unless they decide to set up in the doorways. When they do that, we just shoo the spiders away and rip down the web. They really are harmless! So don't worry about them. They'll eat mosquitos and flies and they are big enough they'll even take care of nasty bot flies if you have a problem with those in your area. We make a few of them into "pets" and toss in a cricket every now and then. Most of the time, they're just pretty to look at.

When we lived in NC, my little kids & I would do the same thing with our 'pet' garden spider. Catch crickets & moths to toss on her web.

We had two of them last year and I miss them. They had webs on our chicken run. I, too, would toss some insects their way. Mostly squash bugs and japenese beetles. If they come back, I will look for a smile.

I remember being rambunctious with my brother in our family garden as kids and I tripped backwards over some beans. I had webbing all over the back of my head and about the time I reached to get it off one of these giant, yellow garden spiders crawled across my face to get away. Not sure where the spider ended up, but I ended up about tow blocks with moves faster than Sugar Ray Leonard!

I do miss those big yellow fly eaters!

For all your spidery thoughts...

This is the greatest website (ooh, a punny too!) that was posted here on another spider thread (there we go again)

I can honestly tell you that I would never, never, *ever* even think about feeding a spider. I wouldn't take a photo of one - that would mean I would have to get pretty close to it.... Never happen. Y'all just keep posting photos of all these spiders - that way I will know what causes the heart attack that puts me in the hospital...

Shudder at the thought of one of these things getting close to me......

Years ago..when I was a kid, we had a lot of these spiders in this area. I remember Grandpa used to pick them up in his hand. Then, there were several years that people were remarking about this particular spider being absent. Now they are back..we have had a half dozen the last three years set up shop at the back door.

They are beautiful~

haha, I was going to say that you should be more worried about the evident beaver out there than the spider!

I love zipper spiders!! Catch crickets and feed her. Let her reproduce as much as possible. These are great bug catchers and are harmless.
