What kind of soil roller is this?
A friend needs to sell this roller on Craigs List, but we don't know what to call it. She was thinking Turkey Foot?? Can't find anything like it with a google search.
I'm hoping someone here knows.

It's hard to tell from the picture. Are there hollow spikes on the roller? If so it's probably a soil aerator.

No, not hollow spikes. Nothing that digs directly into the ground. There is a series of turkey foot shaped mashers.

It's not a "cultipacker"
This is a cultipacker:
The OP is a Crow Foot packer
"Cultipackers" have solid cast iron wheels on a 3" diameter shaft

That's the great thing about HT. Eventually someone shows up that knows what they're talking about.

Never saw one, thanks for posting, didn't know such a thing was made.
Crow foot does sound like the better description for it, I would expect a 'cultipacker' to be heavier.

Could it be that cultipackers come in various styles which all do the same thing?

FT. AS SAID. Thats not a cultapacker. It dosnt pack the soil as the lower one in the pic does. I haver a 3 section packer. I dont have what is origionally pictured.
A packer does just that. It packs the seed around the ground, or the ground around the seed, WHILE breaking down clods. The machine shown ONLY breaks down clods. It would tear up a newly sown field.
The origional pic was invented by a negro man while still in slavery. His white boss said theyd make a million,. He did, till the war. Afterwards the man traveled north and west and settled around, I think Nashville. After some years, he started up a foundry and made them again. The were 5 times the dia of the one picted, and made for horses.
There was an article about them in Farm Collector a couple years ago.

True "cultipackers" come in two types, smooth and notched.
They rely on weight to create a firm , uniform seedbed on tilled soil, and can be used to press seed into tilled soil.
The Crow Foot would do a better job of breaking up large clods, but wouldn't leave as smooth or firm a planting surface
The best way to find out if a farm implement will do what you need is hook it to a tractor and play with it for a while to see if you can get the results you want

Actually, we don't want it to do anything. She wanted to post it on CraigsList and didn't know what to call it.
