What to do with the hazelnuts this year?

Well, I was roguing one of my wheat fields today, and at the edge of the field in the trees and the shade where I stopped to sit on a rock and reconnoiter, I realized the hazelnuts are ready a week or ten days ahead of schedule this year. Usually I pick them and shell them for a snack or roast them for dessert toppings. Is there anyone else who picks them in the wild and has other uses for them? They are so delicious and extra plentiful this year. They store well, like grain almost: I have picked gallons of them and snacked on them into springtime before.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Dale

Hazelnut butter is good. Make it like you would peanut butter. Or make some nutella, which is hazelnut butter and chocolate.

You are lucky! We have acres of hazel around us and every year almost every hazelnut has a worm hole in it.

Check out some gluten free cookie recipes. Some use ground almonds or pecans instead of flour. I'll bet hazelnuts would work out well.

Pick them and freeze them long enough to kill the worms, then you'll have all winter to decide. Here, the squirrels will beat you to them if you're not quick. They start eating them green.

Thankfully we have no worms. There is about a 5-8 day window (or less) of potential picking. If you snooze, the squirrels win.

That's what I'm thinking too. I have a couple young trees and was thinking I'd be dead before I saw any nuts!

When I was a kid we would go to a local park where they let you pick filberts and we would do that each fall. They are truly my favorite nut. We planted 2 trees last summer in our orchard and I can't wait for them to grow a bit and start producing! I agree with the nutella idea - great stuff!
