Propane VS ?

My husband and I just bought our first home which happens to be a mobile home on about 2/3 of an acre. Everything in it is electric with exception to heat which will be propane. There is no tank here so we'll have to buy/rent the tank and have it installed and filled. Today my husband and I were walking around the farm store and saw an electric heater on a shelf. Would something like that be an option for heat during the winter? I would love to someday have a wood burning stove but I've heard it can be difficult to install in a mobile home.

Be very, very careful if you install a wood stove. We lived in a mobile home for years, and once saw a fire in the trailer hood. It burned end to end so fast it was unbelievable. A long, narrow mobile home seems to suck the fire down its length like a chimney. Scary stuff!! So keep a smoke detector in good order even without a wood stove.

If the home already has a forced air propane furnace, that is likely to be the most effective way to heat it. Make sure the skirting is in good shape and preferably insulated. Some people put straw bales around for insulation. If the windows are drafty, plastic them off, etc. Button it up tight as you can for winter.

We live in a mobile home. The question is, where are you? If your up north then an electric heater might work itself to death trying to keep the chill off.
We are in Northeast Texas, and sometimes it gets nippy in here! We have central gas heat, but never run it because it is a royal pain to light the stupid thing. For propane we have 100# tanks we take and have refilled. We own 3 and rotate them out. We cook on gas and have installed a deerborne heater in the front room. Yes we were careful. Yes a mobile home can go up in smoke in a heart beat.
But, there are ways to install wood stoves. And there are even stoves that are made for mobile homes. Be careful, and read all you can before installing. We are intending to put in a small wood stove. We will put it on fireproof brick, with fireproofing behind/around it.
We live in the woods, it just makes sense for the 2 or 3 months that we might need a little warmth to use wood.

In most areas the cost to heat with elect. is three times what propane costs.

................You should beable to purchase a used propane tank for around one dollar a gallon ! If you're smart , you'll use propane for both heat and your water heater with a timer installed . That electric meter will put you in the poor house if you allow it too . , fordy

I'm guessing you found a milk house heater, some thing like this from amazon. Amazon.com: Patton PUH680-U Milk-House 1000/1500-Watt Utility Heater: Home & Kitchen they would heat a small room. I would hesitate to depend on them alone for heat.

I think propane would be cheaper than electric, but maybe a wood stove in a room addition would work for you, even if the room addition was a sun room type space. Best wishes and be safe.
