Deer?

We have not had problems with deer in years, this year the garden is being hit hard. Last week DH asked where that Chistmas Weath was that sings gingles. I found it and he hung it up in the garden, no more deer. The first 2nights we would hear Christmas songs in the middle of the night. LOL, but it has worked so far.

The drought has made it more difficult for them to find a feast, so they are going into gardens more. I'm glad your husband found a way to stop them.

I saw deer tracks in our garden mud right after we moved here, but have never seen tracks or deer after that. Knock on wood, nothing has touched our garden, which isn't fenced in yet.

We play a solar radio out past our goat pens to keep the coyotes, wolves, whatever away and it seems to work really well. We usually try to find a real obnoxious talk radio program to play!

Interesting stuff to consider!

Started this weekend working on next years prevention ( as well as freezer/pantry refill) .... involves scouting, game cams etc ....

Now that's the best deer deterant I've ever heard of!

My aunts house got broken into about a week ago and it sets only about a hundred feet from my home. So I've been racking my brain out trying to figure out some kind of motion detector without spending a ton of money. I think I have it now.

Deer are being more of a problem than usual around us thanks to the drought drying up their food sorces. Stunted soybean fields are being treated like big salads and I even noticed that they had been nibbling on my Hyacinthe Vines growing on my trellis and it is less than 75 feet from the house. Everything is so dry that I really can't blame them. It must be rough being hungry like they seem to be.

Also have noticed that they are more active these days even during daylight hours. I had one run out in front of me yesterday while riding my bike to work. Silly doe just stood in the middle of the road and watched me approach her at 23 mph. She didn't move until I slowed up and started making dog barking sounds at her.

Why did God make such a big animal with such a tiny little brain?

I have to say that I have never had a problem with deer. I live in the middle of nothing but corn and bean fields, though, so I wonder if they just don't prefer those to my pathetic little garden. That and all the cats - would barn cats scare away deer?

I've been tossing my scraps out to our deer--they cant reach the garden. One big doe comes right up to the deck and eats in the daytime. her lunch yesterday was 4 old buscuits, 3 tomatoes, and 4 cucumbers. Shes feeding twins, so I dont feel bad

I feel for the deer, but I live in Oregon and we are still waiting for summer. Hopefully this week, the garden needs it. Well, that Christmas Wreath is still working and then the DH asks do we still have the Holloween Ghost to go in with the apple trees. Had to LOL, Wreaths and Ghosts in the garden. What are the nieghbors thinking?

Here in southren Nova Scotia the deer are multiplying because the law does not allow does to be killed during hunting season. We tried all the different ideas out there to discourage deer from the garden. Anything new works for a few days until the deer get used to it. They are very adaptable! So this year we have the garden planted in raised beds and completely fenced with an electric fence! Deer tracks are all around the perimeter but not one deer has been in the garden! Apparently just one jolt is enough to discourage them.

Same here. If they go on a certain route each time, it seems like they have a good memory implanted in them as to where that fence is. Mine has been turned off for a few days now, and still no deer.... But I will get the weedwhacker out pretty soon...

The deer are very active here. Mama and the twins were hanging out in the garden over the weekend. They sure did love my cabbage ..............all gone. Whatever they are not eating they are trampling!
We are already plotting how better to secure the garden area for next year.

What an excellent, excellent idea. My MIL has a motion activated dancing santa. That just may be the ticket to save our melons.

We have noticed the same thing, they are so stressed out by the drought we have gone up to the pond to feed the fish and several times 2 or 3 deer just look at us and then go back to drinking like they could care less if we were there...and thats in the early afternoon about 1530.

I installed a solar elec. fence a couple of yrs ago. Works great. I lured them in to get a taste of the elec. by hanging a piece of al. foil smeared with peanut butter from the wire. Deer don't like electric peanut butter.
