Brewery spent grains for feed

Free Feed

Copper Harbor in the UP is too far for most folks, but you may have luck checking with local small breweries near your for spent grains as a feed additive.

It is like gluten, yes?
Personally, I think it is mean to use only gluten for feed. I know a lot of farmers do it though. We should treat our animals better than feeding them pure garbage. A righteous man is good to his beast. It just really bothers me.
Sorry, but that is just how I feel. I have seen a few farmers who feed total gluten, and it smells just like what it is...... and that is not fresh, wholesome feed.

No it's not like gluten - its more like a mash. Some animals like it, some don't. Only about half my goat herd would eat it, so it wasn't worth getting for me. The ones that did like really appeared to be enjoying themselves.

Spent grains would be a feed supplement, not an complete feed by itself.
DamnearaFarm and Common Tator like this.

Out of a brewery it would be mostly barley, after fermentation. High in protein, some good vitamins from the yeast. A good supplement, especially if your pastures are drought stressed.
Mekamom, i don't know what your experience is but cattle and sheep absolutely love corn distillers grains and the liquid component as well. If it is animal abuse my livestock are dancing aroung screaming "WHIP ME, Beat me, call me Helen, but give me more" Dried gluten I have no experience with.

One of our local producers feeds it to his hogs, and yes, they adore it. And it's good for them, as posters have noted -- it's not spoiled at all.

The local brewer sells all of it's spent mash and has a waiting list of farmers that want to buy it. Don't think that it was ever offered for "free".....

The grains dont go through fermentation.
Grains are heated around 170deg then cooled and the grain is removed (the liquid is called wort) then yeast is put in (pitched) and the wort is put in a fermenter container.
So the grains are just cooked grain.

I know a lady who raises organic Berkshire pigs partly on the spent grain from our local organic brewery - both the pork and the beer are awesome!

My middle DS has a brewery in Portland OR. A guy picks up some of his spent grain and feeds it to his pigs. DS is glad to have someone to haul some of it off. Wish we lived nearer, I take some in a heartbeat. DH just has to make do with free beer.

We get some spent barley from the local brew pub. See:

Spent Barley | Sugar Mountain Farm

also see:

Feeding Barley | Sugar Mountain Farm

It smells like barley soup and is good food as part of the animal diet.
