Found a sorghum press today!!

I know at sometime I have seen on here or Craig's List, people wanting to by a sorghum press. I may have the opportunity to buy this one. Lady's husband passed away and she is selling some items and I asked about this and she doesn't know what she wants for it and is going to try to find out and let me know? If "you were going to buy this, what would "you" pay for one? I plan on reselling it, if I were to get it. As you can see it is big and heavy, belt driven. Was mounted on some 5X5 and has rotted. Looks to be all there.

Thats an awesome find. You may have to go to an antique iron forum to get a price.

I am looking for one to run off my AC-WC, its worth a lot depending on your local market. Around here you cant even find them and if that one isnt rusted beyond repair (and it looks pretty good actually) it could go for $500 and up.

Lucky you.

When I inherited mine, it was in little bitty pieces, and I've not yet tackled it's re-assembling.

I'm looking forward to crushing sweet corn stalks and see what that will boil down to.

Like SS sayus. Its worth alot/ Get on YT Forums and into the impliment page, and ask your question there, along with the pics. Theyll tell you true enough. Good luck on getting it. Time was, when I would have wanted it. Not now.

the one that sold here got $100 for it and was as good as the one you have in the pictures except that it did not have a drive wheel on the top. It had a place for a pole that you hooked horses to.

braggscowboy---very much interested in acquiring that sorgum press. I'd go 500 right now and if you find out its worth more I still might be interested in it but until I sell calfs this fall money is a little tight. I've been looking for a press for years so we can make syrup.

Will see what I can do, don't want to push her right now. Too much advice from everyone. Tried to by anvil from her and she says " so and so said not to let that go for less than", but they did not buy it. I told her what I would give for it and the others will have to come up with the money. Same way with press, they tell her it is worth money, but don't buy. I told her I would, but will not pay more than what I feel it is worth, alread made a long trip and did not get much. Would have to go again. Give her a few days and then I will call her.

A lot of people don't have the money to get what isn't a necessity nowadays but don't mind giving an elderly lady some advice on what they know it should bring so she doesn't get ripped off by someone. I've done it myself. Not saying you'd try to rip her off, but just because they couldn't buy it doesn't mean they didn't give her good advice on what it is worth. Everyone likes a bargain, but this woman may need every penny these things are worth to live on for the rest of her life...

Not at all, that was the reason I was there. Invited by her. She knew I would be honest and fair. I made a fair offer on the anvil, as I have bought and sold several. Knew the value and what I could do, when and if I found someone who wanted it. The press on the other had I did not know a reasonable value, nor did she. We looked on the internet while I was there and we could not find anything that was helpful. I was kind enough to drive 150 miles to help her in deciding how best to sell her items. I felt the best way since she head the help, was a good estate sale or tag sale somtime called. Big barn with plenty of room. I did price some items for her and some I could not. Gave her a name to call on the tools and the old farm equipment, sell the wheels and junk the rest, it was pretty well gone. Had a good bull rake, Fordson tracton, not good. and the press. I am not one to do that to someone who does not know. I bought a set of goat horns and a vintage pony bridle, not in good shape and paid 35.00 a plenty. Just felt I needed to buy something since I had gone that far.

....... not to offend or accuse, but I've seen just as many blowhards tell a tall tale to the unsuspecting, having no intention of buying the article, themselves, but getting a genuine kick out of ruining any further negotiations for the seller or other potential buyers.

Idiots.

That said, that press in the pic, if sound, may well be worth the 500.

We just had an elderly widow around here get ripped off by someone who paid her $150 for an almost pristine (and fully running) hit or miss engine her husband had restored. He told her no one uses those old things for water pumps anymore but he would give her the scrap price. A bunch of us want to track this guy down and ....well I better not say.

Glad you are helping her and please let us know how it comes out.

In good condition and ready to use, a horizontal press like that is around $1500. but also commonly comes with a pan. I've been looking for a long time, every time I ask about one in someones yard "that was great grandpa's mill, not for sale" Last fall I bought a vertical mill for $900 that was set up on a trailer, chain driven with drive gear and small engine. So I got what I need. Old fella was retired and quit making sorghum. Last I knew someone was importing new ones again, but they're not cheap. I think a chinese made horizontal mill was $3500 if ordered direct from china, with minimum of 5 units at once.
I joined the sweet sorghum producers association and went to the annual meeting last winter. National Sweet Sorghum Producers & Processors Assocaition Got about 3/4 acre planted for a start this spring. We grew an acre an a half 3 years ago and hauled it to a big producer to be processed, but decided not to grow it again until we could process it ourselves.

Have been buying and selling for a long time, antiques and collectibles. I do get disgusted when I ask about something that is worth say 50.00, and all I could get out of it and they say "so and so" said that is worth 200.00, I always ask did they try to buy it? NO! I much rather deal with someone who knows what something is worth, then if I can buy it, Ok! Everyone likes a bargan, but the bargains area about gone, unless you can find it at a flea market or garage sale. The lady we have been talking about is not old by any means, not as old as me, she is plenty sharp. What will happen most likely, is someone will come along and buy everything for scrap and I will loose out and it will go to China to make junk to come back here. I do know from experience, one cannot buy it all!

It is very hard to be both buyer and seller, I guess if you both are happy with a price of an item, then it is a good deal for both. And yes there are a lot of people out there that take advantage of people that have no idea what things are worth. Treat people fair and good carma comes back to you, treat people unfair and the big guy upstairs will have the last say in things. > Thanks Marc

Your choice. I have never had a bad experience buying and paying with PayPal. Ebay gave the buyer "rights" a few years ago and buying has never been better. Lousy sellers end up refunding $$$ they would have gotten away with previously.
