What has been your BEST BARTER for 2012?

I had to share mine, in it's own thread, I am so thrilled!

"Mrs M," a gal I had been in touch with, for almost 2 years, via email (she had bought some plants from me, lives in WA, S of me). Over a year ago, she had mentioned she had some glass panels, perfect for a greenhouse, offering to sell them to me. I told her I would have to save my money. That was over a year ago...

Recently, I was researching Tall Hoop Houses, thinking it would be more affordable, and had figured out where I would buy the materials from. Then, I received (2) books on Greenhouses, both completely different, and highly complementing each other! After skimming one, reading more of the other, I found myself increasingly disappointed to go the Hoop House route. So much so, that I began checking CL multiple times/day, just hoping there would be a real deal on there for materials...

Now, enter today. I thought of Mrs. M, who had been holding the glass panels, so I called her. We began just discussing gardening, what we were each doing. She was VERY frustrated, trying to figure out how to solve her gardening challenges. Just this past week, she had a local gal come out to her place and recommend she do "Lasagna Gardening." So, Mrs. M bought the book, but was very skeptical of that working in our climate (It DOESN'T). It is too wet/cool here for it to work, and helloooooooooo SLUGS I told her what to do with her property challenges, make her work far easier, and told her how to quickly put together a garden area in time for planting in just a couple days (using everything she already had). She just needed some guidance, really. Once that topic was covered, I brought up the glass, told her I was saving money, didn't know how much she wanted, and she interrupted me. At this point, she asked me if I would allow her to come here, spend the day with me, pick my brain, see what I am doing, and in return she would GIVE me all that glass...

(70) Tempered Glass Panels 3' X 6'. Of course, I instantly agreed, most happily

Shortly after that conversation, I sat down with DH and we discussed my future Greenhouse design...

Soapbox Roof, 36'+ long, and up to 18' wide. Since I just got my Nursery License, this will be a real blessing!

Mrs. M is coming on Wednesday and by this weekend, we will go pick up the panels. Soon after that, we will get the area leveled, and DH will begin building (!!!). I may have it done by next month

A less momentous, but cool Barter?

I am trading (60) Chocolate Mint plants for credit with a Farmer, who is on a 40 acre Certified Organic Farm, running a large CSA, also raises meat Chickens, Cattle, and is a hub for selling WA Grown Organic Fruits and also Raw Milk (from WA Certified Raw Milk Dairies). This past week, I went to meet her, brought her a Spearmint and a Chocolate Mint plant for samples. She has a contract with a Chocolatier for next year. The Chocolate Mint plants will be grown for that purpose. Cool, eh?

Great story! Good score!

We traded work for three dump trucks full of wood chips. The man who was running the chipper did not have men to help drag the tree limbs to the chipper. My older sons and husband worked to drag the limbs over to the chipper for him and then one of them would drive the truck to our place, dump the chips and get the truck back to him quickly.

We got 3 big loads of wood chips and he got 3 men working for about 5 hours each. We thought it was a good trade.

I got my SO to agree that if I lost 10lbs, he would take us to Turkey. Those 10 lbs are gone!

So far just the usual baked goods & garden seedlings for general grocery/personal care items that a gf obtains through coupon shopping. Recently gifted a 55 gal food safe barrel to a fellow prepper we met through our meetup group, he's talking about hunting opps this fall.

Congrads on the glass I can't wait to read what wonderful opps you make with that greenhouse!

Yesterday, Sonnyboy traded a couple of old fishing rods that were laying around when we bought the place for a small outboard motor for his (up till now) rowboat.

We regularly trade eggs for venison.

Not true. A hound that puts up $5000 worth of pelts a year is indeed worth at least a grand.

I traded 25 chickens for someone to cut up an old boxelder tree that had fallen in an ice storm last year (on top of an shed! Grr!). He spent and afternoon doing it and is now having fun with all of those extra chickens!

I could cut something on the ground, or just tow it out with the tractor, but this was hung up on the building and I can't jump out of the way anymore if something rolls wrong. Great deal for me.

Today I traded a piglet for 7 laying hens. The same folks are going to see if they can barter with someone else for 2 round bales and then trade me the hay for a second piglet.

I love trading.

I'm not sure this qualifies as a barter but my best deal was I bought a rotary cutter and let me neighbor use it. It works on his tractor which he lets me use.

I also traded 3 barred rocks just starting to lay for the labor to make new hydraulic hoses for that same tractor after several burst while i was using it.

Ours just happened a few minutes ago and I remembered this thread...

One night for seven (kids in sleeping bags, DW and I in a room) in a B&B near the amusement park we'll be attending the day before in exchange for helping the owner prepare for the next guest.

We normally camp a couple nights but this year money is tighter and we saved by not camping and by using a different vehicle that gets better mileage.

Not as exciting as some of yours, but a lady disbudded my baby goats and all she wanted in exchange was the phone number of another friend who had Berkshire piglets for sale. I ended up also giving her some comfrey and rhubarb starts. Then, the pig friend gave the disbudding friend 4 piglets for free because his sow had 19 and he figured that was too many for the sow to handle!

Every barter is GREAT, as it is a way to secure what is needed/wanted in a frugal way, without $ exchange

No matter what size, fun, and good to hear about about barters of all sizes... Gives us all ideas (!!!)

Keep 'em coming

We traded a goat for six sheep. How's that?

Actually for traded a goat for two donkeys and then the donkeys for the sheep.
