Arrow What Do You Grow In Your Hoop House In The Summer?

What Do You Grow In Your Hoop House In The Summer? This is our first year using our hoop house (has roll up sides & lots of ventilation), we live in Northern IL. In full sun on a 95 degree day yesterday, even with the sides up it got pretty hot. Our lettuce & peas are ready to harvest and get out of there, we have onions, carrots & beets in the ground - will they do ok? We have 4 tomatos in there (they have grown to a huge size!!), can they stand the heat though?? We have 9 outside in case they don't...

Just wondering what you all grow in your hoop houses in the summer? This is a learning process for us and we would appreciate any adivice from your experiences!

Thanks

I have mobile ones, so I just pull mine down in the Summer.

Basically any hot weather veggie- tomatoes (although those will not set fruit well if it gets extremely hot- their pollen becomes sterile), sweet and hot peppers, melons, cucumbers, okra.

You can spray on VISOR-WHITE with a hand sprayer to cut down the light penetration. We use it on the greenhouses at work. I think they used plain old whitewash on the old glass ones. The other option is to use shade-cloth over the top of the plastic. Grower supply will carry both.

I use my plastic house as an unheated greenhouse. It doesn't have rollup sides, but I open the doors at each end and put a box fan in to move the air.
I grow tomatoes, peppers, cukes, summer squash, winter squash and beans...all things that like heat.

Google Image Result for http://doorgarden.com/images/green-house/hoop-house-const-42.JPG

Mine are small and I just throw a piece of row cover over them.

GardenQuilt Cover | Buy from Gardener's Supply

Shade cloth is good but expensive. Row cover cuts 40% of the suns rays....James

OK! Thanks! I've used the rowcover before, but didn't know I could build a hoophouse like that! Cool! I think I have all of the wood for it too! Won't my hubby be happy! (hee...hee..)

Down here in the south, a green house will cook most things. I grow egg plants. Can't ever get to hot for them.
