A brown paper bag; looks like the size to hold a magazine.

I`m sure you mean the metal piece laying in front of the brown paper bag. I have no clue, what does it look like on the other side? > Thanks Marc

Looks like a right-angle ratcheting wrench. Hard to tell from the picture, but if you squeeze the two "levers" on the left side, does the circular piece rotate?

My guess would be a lever or some other part off some kind of equipment. The key is that it is made of brass. Steel is much cheaper so one should ask "why brass?" Brass is used in places that steel would rust or corrode. Maybe a part from a boiler system, locomotive, ship, or some such.

I believe it is called "junk". If you aren't careful, it can breed.
I'll second the part off some machine idea. The ring shape at one end looks like part of a damaged pivot point.

It's the rachet bar off a brass monkey. It must have frozen off. Does he have any big balls?

Does the small vertical piece have a hole in it?

An old brass cannon sight. Held by the open ring it stayed perpendicular. The attached peice was used for sighting, elevation determined by the angle between the cannon barrel and the foot on the left hand side.
Pretty good guess huh?

Since it can't be identified easily, I would guess it's worth about five cents in the brass scrap pile. Would not put it in the glass display case.
The paper bag is worth more!

I can't tell much by looking at it laying down but it almost looks a bit like a holder for an oil lamp, one of the kind that hangs on the wall. Some of them have a lip on the bowl that would fit into that bracket looking piece and snap into place. Looks like it would work for one that they carried on ships too, to keep them from falling out of the brackets while on the water. But, that's just a guess.

That's a very good guess. I could see it being used in that way. Now to find the lamp that fits?

And the hole would allow it to pivot as the ship rocked. That is a guess that is making sense for the thing!

I was thinking this, too. However, the lamp would be too close to the wall to be safe. Perhaps, there was an arm that attached to this bracket that held the lamp further away from the wall?

A strap was put in the hole to hang it on the gear shift of an old Ford tractor. It was used to whack the starter so the bendix would kick in.

I didn't want to say this before but why would you hang the lamp from the wall in the first place? It could swing in all four directions if it was hanging from the ceiling (using the handle that most lamps have). I think most boats I have been on move in all four directions, well heck, usually they can move ANY direction if the waves are big enough!
