the milk's a-flowing and the cheesemaking is in full swing, which means buckets of whey. can it go onto the compost pile or too much protein?

We had the BEST tomatoes last summer due to whey. Some goes there, some goes to compost, some goes directly around the pecan trees!

We mix ours with water (it's kind of acid) and use a garden watering can to walk down the row and water everything. It made my peas green up like crazy.

Be aware that flies LOVE to lay maggots in whey saturated soil.

Acres magazine a few months back had a piece on how a guy had renovated his pastures with milk. I think it works because it feeds all the beneficial micro bio in addition to what ever direct fertilizer effect on the grasses.

Just in case you haven't tried it, pasta cooked in whey is really yummy...another use for it before it goes out to the compost!
