Motion Light Recommendations

I need to purchase several motion lights for our new property. I'd like to put a couple around the barn area and a couple out in the dog yard. Obviously solar would be easiest to install. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I prefer to spend the money once for a reliable product than deal with junk that doesn't work.

You do realize that motion sensors in the country get all sorts of false trips? Critters can set them off, the wind blowing vegetation can set them off, dappled sunlight sets off daytime motion detectors.

It used to be you could buy a motion detecting light and expect the electronics to last for ten years. IME, the cheap junk being made now lasts only a few months, especially if there is the slightest power fluctuation.

Where possible, use cheap solar walkway lights that you can replace as needed. I always have a mini-flashlight of some sort on me. (Too many years working in theatres, and discovering just how handy having extra light is). The LED headlamps are pretty nifty to have as well.

My thought is that a place with lights outside is an invitation for thieves. Motion detectors are something that you will get use to false alarms and ignore. For thieves, they make a great warning that someone is coming near and it is time to melt into bushes.

We love them, but I have never seen any that are solar powered, especially since there are two flood lights.

We buy the best ones Menards sells, I believe they were around $15 each (two bulbs). We have a set on the barn, garden shed and will put one on the garage. They have worked for three years, so far.

These are the flood lights that can be turned on manually, if desired and then easily reset to auto.

The manual override, are the type to get.

I hated my motion lights. They are tripped by my cats, and any other critter that passes through in the dark, all night long they go on and off, really annoying. Think long and hard before you install one.

I think motion lights are great. I like to walk out back to check on the chickens late at night and it is nice that the 4 sets of lights lead the way.

I actually want them as part of my predator control. So being tripped off by animals is exactly what I'm looking for. Though I can't say every time one is tripped I won't be looking out to see what tripped it.

I guess for the dog yard perhaps just a solar light would be good -there is nothing right now and I want to be able to see them and anything else that's in the yard.

There seems to be a range in prices and I don't know if it's a case of you get what you pay for or ? Reviews seem to be all over the map so I can't go by them.

Lights coming on won't deter most predators

Adjust the sensitivity down, if they trigger for every little thing, and be sure to turn off the test mode.
