Is the book "One Second After" worth ordering?

Ok, I'm cheap. But I've heard about this book and I think I remember some of you have read it? Is it worth 10 bucks? Did it make you think in new ways or think of something you would do that you hadn't planned before in the case of an eotwawki scenario? Is it an interesting story?

YES! Well written. Scary as Hades. Make you rethink a LOT of things. Yes, it's changed my long term plans.

I have it on audio, PLUS in hardback.

Have listened three times.

Also cruised the author's website.

You will cry.

i have read it multiple times and love it every time. it still makes me cry and scares the mess out of me. it is my "motivator".

i recommend this book to everyone, and everyone ends up loving it and passing the recommendation to others.

But they have a kajillion billion stupid romance stories, because those are useful...

I got my husband to read One Second After and my all-time favorite Alas, Babylon all in the space of about one week. OSA really made an impression on him. When I shop, I always pick up extra BOGO items and he had not always been real receptive to that. Well after reading OSA, when I was picking up a couple extra cans of the BOGO canned vegs, he said "You should get a couple more, remember what happened to those people in that book" and then he sort of flinched/shuddered, so I said "OK."

He is much more receptive to storing food now, although I have noticed whenever he goes up to visit his brother on the weekend, after he gets back there will always be a "hoarding" comment. (I think the family psychology, or more likely pathology, is to always make sure the in-law is held up to some form of ridicule, poor thing, just not right, etc. Makes them feel superior I reckon). Anyway when I get the "hoarding" comment, I do have a reply which I will not trouble you good people with all those asterisks.

Would recommend OSA. Also heard there was a PDF floating around for free, you might google for it. I am glad I have the hard copy though.

ETA: This is possibly a SPOILER, but I hope not. Regarding the crying comments, there is one scene that will make you cry, or more likely sob uncontrollably. I belong to a gun forum and those "internet tough guys" were discussing OSA and all admitted to crying like little girls. You will know when you get there.

I was going to say..... we just moved from the most remote region of Michigan (in da U.P. ) and even our old library had that book.

I wouldn't recommend buying it simply because if you read it once..... you'll never forget it.

I am a guy and I freely admit I teared up during a certain part..... and will never forget.
May have to do with the fact that I am a father myself...

Yeah,I read it..and I read it again.And I teared up the second time just like I did the first.And it made me think about things that hadn't crossed my mind.Son and daughter and wife read it,too.Excellent book.

I've read it several times. It helped me with some of my preps.

I like the book, though, for introducing others to the idea of prepping. It put it all together in a succicent (sp) format for my husband. I tried to get him on board, I'd read a post from HT or give him a little tidbit from something I'd read, but it was all disjointed. So he never truly understood the urgency of my wanted to prepare.

One Second After put it in an easy to read format and put it all together in one package.

It's a great book to give as a gift.

One of the very best of the genre, imo. Not flawless, but an exciting read with plenty to make you think. Well worth the ten bucks to have a copy you can loan out/ pass on, but there is that .pdf link up there, too... thanks for that, I just added the file to my set of thumb drives for longterm storage.

I'd also give high praise to Kunstler's "World Made By Hand" and "Witch of Hebron." Those look at the situation a couple decades after some sort of collapse(s) rather than the immediate coping, but do a great job making a small community come to life.

Edit add: I see Amazon has a used paperback available $5.75 with free shipping if you can bundle it into the $25 minimum order with some other stuff.

Mine too. I've been an apocolypse fiction fan for years and Alas Babylon is still my favorite. However, OSA has become my second favorite (I also loved World Made by Hand)

OK, I have to chime in with a less than great review. Too introspective, too much beating himself up, and a lack or realistic approach to death bothered me.

Personally, I like Lucifers Hammer better, as well as Lights Out, and Tom Sherry's Novels.
