I got a tractor!

Haven't been this excited since I got my first car... come to think of it, maybe even more than that!

I got a tractor! - Homesteading Questions

Its an old 1976 Massey Ferguson 245. It's going to need a little work, but the engine runs very well, and all hydrolics work well. I have a friend who knows tractors and does heavy equipment repair. He looked at the tractor with me. Luckily, the fellow who sold it to me was willing to come down in price nearly what my friend estimated it would cost to repair it.

The fellow who sold it was selling because his father had passed on, and he needed to sell everything. Not quite an estate sale, but sort of. I think it worked out well for both of us. Best thing is I was able to buy all the implements with it - box scrape, straight scrape blade, bushhog, post-hole auger, fertilizer spreader and a bunch of other stuff I don't even know the name of.

After waiting so long, now I can finally start to do some work on improving the property. Can't wait to start cutting back the brush and put in the perimeter fencing.

This is a nice little tractor, Massey never made to many bad tractors. You will get a lot of work done with it. Good Luck > Thanks Marc

Orchard model......see how the exhaust runs down and out the back below ? So you can work an orchard with lower hanging limbs and not tear the exhaust pipe off.

Enjoy !

Good deal, I have a 255 with loader. Loader will do the work of 10 men by yourself.

COOL! I didn't even catch that. God is good! My property is mostly in pine, and so I am planning on trying a silvo pasture approach. That will definitely come in handy working between the rows of trees.

Congrates. Nice tractor.

Looks like you're not the only lucky one this week. I'll be paying for my new to me tractor tonight and picking it up this weekend. It's a '68 ford 4000 industrial.

Nice looking. How many hp and what did ya pay for it.
I dont believe its an orchard model, or it would have special fenders. Having the muffler up or down was an option buyers could opt for. Lower pipes are good for starting fires

Sometimes you don't know what a really good deal you got until you start adding up the value of the implements that got thrown in. I paid 2k for my 8n, but got about 1k of implements with it. Sweet!

It's 45hp. He was asking 4700, which is fair as near as I can tell, for a tractor this size/age that is in good working order. Unfortunately, there were a few things wrong with it. The radiator needed a new neck and cap, there was a small oil leak up front, but the biggest thing was a leak near the tranny.

A friend of mine is a mechanic and said it would probably be fine if you keep topping off it's fluids. But he also that it could also be real problem down the line, especially if you used it heavily. Unfortunately to get to it that area, you have to sepparte the frame inhalf, which is labor intensive and he said would cost betwen 2000 and 2500. (Including fixing the other smaller problems.) The seller agreed to lower his asking price by 2200, providing I bought all the implements for 2200.

As I look at it, I either got the tractor for $5k (assuming $2.5k to fix the leak etc.) Looking at it another way, I paid full price, and got the implements for free. Either way I'm pretty happy.

Didn't know you needed so much education to own a tractor! I believe he's an MD, not a PHD.

I finally realized you might be asking about a Post Hole Digger. In the initial post he said he got a post hole auger.
