Hoop house/greenhouse

Hi all,

I'm going to check out a nursery moving sale tomorrow am. They have 2 or 3 greenhouses (frames only) the ad says 10 x 50 approx size. They want $300 each.
It looks like they may be a little wider than 10' in the picture.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you use these for general covered storage or work space. And how long does the poly covering last?

It looks like new poly material would cost approx. 150 to cover something this size.

Deal or no deal?

Where Are they? That is a steal. My friend just put a hoop house and it cost $4500. I am building one and already have 300 in it. Buy them all and resell them. I know I would be interested.

I'll take one. Great price.

the poly covering is only going to last a 2 - 8 years depending on it's quality and your local sun and wind. The odds of it being closer to the shorter end of that range are high. As a work shop / garage, I would opt for some other type of covering.

Thanks, Big Dave.

What are you building yours from? A kit?

What size was your friend's for 4500? Was that a high tunnel or just a greenhouse? These appear to be about 8' high or so in the center.

What is the frame made from? How old? PVC can and will get old and brittle. Very cheap for a metal frame hoop....James

$4500? That would be a total rip.

Yes, metal frame hoops. I went and checked them out this morning. Turns out they're 14' x 100'.

The person in charge wasn't there, I have to call back.

Of course, I have to disassemble and haul away myself at that price.

We have had a hoop house for the last 10 years, we use it to start seeds in the spring. It is made of PVC pipe and we have had to replace parts over the years, we do leave up the PVC part up all year long and only take down the poly every year. The poly is made for green/hoop houses and it has lasted for the last for 3 years. Would have lasted longer, but a goat decided to poke holes in it. Another "Do you know what Your goats have done?" moment with the DH. Now as for storage or as a work place, no way. The humitiy, at least in my hoop house would rune everything, even with the doors open.

We put in a 14x20 last year. Metal hoops would have been $3500 with us putting it up. we opted for wood for about $700. I think $300 is a GREAT deal!

14x100 metal for $300. I would be standing there waiting when whom ever is in charge gets to work and see if he would knock off some and take all of them. Then I would put enough in piles at home for a 14x30(good size for a home owner) for around $300 with instructions on how to build the ends out of treated wood for whom ever wants to buy one-----hmmm see some money to be made here.

Mine is made from top rail fence> it is a gothic style. It is 21 X41. My friend that just bought and put his up NEW bought it form a place in Mo. $4500 was turn key with the side panel rollers and end walls using only one layer of 6mil plastic. It is 45 X 95, it is also gothic. The Gothic helps to let the ice and snow slide off. You should double the plastic and use an air layer to help if you are in a cold climate. The height of the hoop house will retain the heat in the winter to extend your growing season. Kerr center in Poteau Oklahoma has a site telling you how to build a hoop house and where to buy the materials. Price for that one is about 1200 dollars.
