It looks a bit like a hayrack for goats... the spinning top would keep the goats from climbing up on it soiling the hay.

It was in the farm when they bought it and figured it must have a purpose other than what they are using it for.

I agree with YH, the base looks like a standard hay feeder I have seen in Extension books on sheep\goats. In fact I made one for my sheep years ago (without the spinner). The top is to keep the goats from climbing. You don't need the spinner for sheep. take it off and add two more 1x4 to the front to increase capacity.

It could have been created for something else... but it sure looks like the perfect goat feeder to me. They are funny little critters... love to reach up to feed, browsing instead of grazing. They also tend to be climbers... love to be up.... no matter where as long as its up! And they can be very picky eaters... mine wouldnt touch a blade of hay that had been stepped on. This gadget fits the bill on all counts.

I can't believe that it was built for a goat feeder. I can see a hoove going into one of the slots resulting in a broken leg.

Yeah that's what I thought when I saw it. Looks like a goat leg-breaking apparatus

Really, goats are bad enough about getting a leg stuck in vertical slats but spinning horizontal ones? Maybe if slats were nailed over the open parts so a hoof - even a little one - wouldn't go in it would be good.

I was thinking goat killer, too! Maybe the creator hated goats?

Don`t we all hate goats at one time in our life, I think it would work great. > Marc

in some countries they use a device like that to thresh bundles of wheat and cereal grains, there is usaly some method to spin the cyclinder, tho, (belt for motor, or tread mill, or crank or some thing),

you lay the head of the bundle on the spinning reel and it knocks off the seeds,

had a picture once that was simular to what you show,

more modern version

now if that is what it was made for I do not know,

I was thinking the same thing as FHM. I think the sheaves of grain could be pounded on the slats and the grain would fall into the trough. Not sure why it would need to turn. I agree that goats esp. young ones would surely break a leg on it.

It is a potao peeler. Put a bucket of potatoes in the drum, and rotate it until they are peeled. The bottom is for the hogs to get to the peelings and clean up the waste,
