got fired, now what?

I just got fired today. I've never been fired, or even come close to it in my entire 18 years of working life.

I've had problems with their management since two weeks after I got out of training, so it's not entirely a surprise. Have only been working there since the end of October of last year.

So now what? Do I put this job down on my resume? If so, how do I tactfully explain why I got fired without sounding like either a whiner or a rebel against authority?

I start school in August to work on getting a career of the sort I originally went to college for. So I'm leery of trying to find full-time work now and then have to finagle a school schedule into it.

Advice? Opinions? Yell at me for having a big mouth and giving them the excuse they were looking for to fire me? Offer me a job? :P

I got fired a few years ago. First off file for unemployment. If they never documented some kind of pattern of bad behavior you will probably get it. My employer claimed they fired me for cause, but they had no documented disciplinary action against me and absent that the state granted me UE with no contest. In reality they were shedding a big paycheck. As far as future employment be honest while saying as little as possible.

I don't know if it was corporate policy or some kind of law, or the results of HIPAA, but if somebody called in at my last job, the HR department would only give date of hire, date of departure, and nothing more - no reason for leaving, no answers about work habits. That also went for direct contact with the immediate supervisor.

LOL! I got fired from the same company twice. (Long story) Put it on your list of places you worked. It really is no big deal. Be honest but brief when asked to explain.

I was fired once. One of the best days of my life. My husband had to keep telling me to stop giggling and dancing around. The one thing I learned from the experience was that if you keep telling the boss the truth he will find a way to get rid of you. Getting fired came as absolutely no surprise to me. Oh and file for unemployment for sure. I got a wrongful dismissal finding on my claim so I got severance and my full unemployment benefits which I tranfered into unemployment education benefits and thus was able to go back to school. When I graduated I sent my ex-boss a cactus as a gift with a card thanking "the biggest little prick I know for my success".

But to answer your question. File for unemployment. Start looking for a job. Don't tell them you plan to go back to school. Not their business and for all you know plans fall through so why limit yourself in your search. In your cover letters don't mention that you were fired. The reason you left your last postition will come up in an interview. Say you were terminated. If they ask directly if you were fired, say yes. If they ask why, tell the truth - personality conflict, difference in work ethics, problems with management style etc. Never whine or slag off your old employers.

Next time you find yourself in a situation where you don't get on with your employer plan an exit strategy before you quit or you push until you get fired. This does not mean that you have to surrender your opinions (kiss butt) to keep a job. It just means learn to read the writing on the wall sooner - especially if you are the one with the spray paint doing the graffiti.

I got fired once from a place I absolutely hated, and it was weird how it still hurt my feelings.

Be honest but tactful with anyplace you apply to. Don't make the old boss out to be an ogre even if they are. Just say that there was a personality conflict, you couldn't perform at your best under their management style, that kind of corporate speak.

I think this is the Law! I believe it is under homeland security...privacy act!
That is why my boss...trucking company...ends up with so many drivers that are TERRIBLE!! Even if he calls the old employer they can not tell him that they wrecked 3 trucks and left one sitting with the keys in it on the side of the highway!

I have been fired once in my life, and even though I wasn't wild about the job and it was a terribly long commute, it still really hurt my feelings.
It didn't take long, though, to be thankful to be rid of the place.

As for your resume, you can include it or not. There is no requirement that you list any and every job you've held on your resume. And since you were there such a short time, it might not be worth mentioning it.
If you do include it, and are asked about it in an interview, just say something vague like "it wasn't the job for me"

Funny but I came close to being fired today. Partially my fault and partially back stabbing on the part of a customer.

Don't try to hide it but don't offer any more information than necessary.

Restate your resume - when I was in the job market a year ago, our Job Service explained a "functional skills resume". You lead off with skills, close with job history. Sell your assets to the reviewer, where you worked is of less consequence. Good luck!

My reputation precedes me, I have standing job offers. Typically I work for myself but when I do work for others I bite my tongue and give 110% (yes you can by thinking ahead of the job you're doing right now) I know people know me for that but I am picky, I won't work for idiots, or dishonest people. If I was fired I would look at what I could have done in that job better, even if it wasn't my fault or was beyond my ability. As i get older I find I have physical limitations so I really have to gear up my attitude and presence, but the bosses job is MY job and job one always. Where I might have let a subcontractor off easy and finished something I now ride them to leave clean and done. I have always tried to pay attention and work one step ahead but now I can stay 2 or 3 steps ahead. And when there is nothing to do, find something to do! Its always best to answer your boss' next request with, "done"! And when he walks around the corner and finds the next job already at least half set up..... well if you're fired its only cause he's next. Adopt my attitude, I'm there to do a job, I am going to do it better than anyone, I care about it and I am getting paid for it after all. I'm not riding a perfect work record of achievement but I do coast on that attitude. If you want to be employable, be payable! That's my advise to you, be payable.

never been fired yet but after my boss ordered me to falsify documents to the health department and I refused, I saw the writing on the wall and my last day as a leo is next friday the 13th. everybody said just quit and I would be quarenteed unemployment but stupid me I gave two weeks notice. not all bad though, I'm burning three sick days a week until its over.

Every once in a while, I will respond to a post with a simple "thank you." There is so much more that goes into that. People who rate a thank you uphold the principles of our great nation.

Its actually not part of any law that I know of but many employers just dont want to get sued so as a matter of policy they only release dates of employment, position held, and sometimes if they are eligible for re-hire. Basically, if you say anything bad anymore about a former employee you stand to just have to keep dealing with them.

Got fired by Home Depot when I refused to accept their token yearly 25 cent per hour pay increase. The increase would have driven me into the next tax bracket and I would have come home with less money. I don't work for free and told my boss that. He and the store manager didn't like my attitude. I am 62 and that was about 10 years ago. Between my Navy retirement and VA disability I make more than a HD ass't manager anyway. I was not a "yes man" employee and that is a no no at Home Depot.

Thanks, all. I'm just in shock that I got fired. I saw it coming, but never thought it would actually happen, ya know?

I dared to have an opinion. Meh, it wasn't the right place for me, and I've known that since about November. Time to do some projects around the house, at least, while I look for a new job.

Being "supervised" by 20-25 year old yes boys at Home Depot used to drive me nucking futz. Most didn't know what end of a hammer to hold. The good ones got promoted to store manager so fast you hardly even knew their names. Opinions, especially when you know you are right are hard things to have.

I find the only way I get along is to have as little interaction with anyone as possible. My major problem is I'm not a slacker and will get fired for actually working. It is disruptive behaviour.

I have never gotten fired either, I have quit a couple times, and layed off a couple times, but never fired. Get you unemployment while looking for a new job, if your worth your weight in gold you will have no problem getting a job. Good luck, > Thanks Marc

Ya I got fired once .I was making $18,500 k a year on a 4000 head sow farm .Some punk handled some bred gilts a little ruffer then I thought he should and I returned the favor .I told my next employer the whole story and assured him that I would do it all over again .He hired me and I became manager of 6 4000 head sow farms making 65 k a year .

Did you have any overlapping jobs? I've never been fired but I did quit a job after a couple weeks. I did not put that on my resume. In today's market it can be harder to get a job when you don't have a job. It gets harder the longer you've been out of work. So.... if you don't list this job right now I'd list it if you don't get another job quickly.

Sometimes employers ask if you've ever been fired. Since you have, figure out a good way to describe the problem. Your recent employer can't really say anything bad but sometimes prospective employers will ask if an old one would rehire given the chance. A pregnant pause says a lot.

well when you fill out applications put it down as "downsized" rather than fired..and even if they do check it out as a reference, the company legally shouldn't be able to say anything bad against you..

I however would not put it as a reference, only as a previous job and write reason for leaving, downsized.

Put other things in your reference areas.

there is so much downsizing going on esp this month, (after holidays are all over and winter nearly over)...so it is something most jobs will expect to see on resumes.

If you are "renting" where you live, consider changing areas too..now might be the time to start that new homestead..maybe a rent to buy location with some self sufficiency?

Don't wordsmith your response to a potential new employer. If you were fired, let them know that is what happened. If they find out later you were fired and not downsized, that is now grounds for termination. Don't let the old employer screw you twice.

My brother's boss told him they can only verify the dates worked & not give out any info on how well or bad of a worker the person is. That seems pretty stupid as what is the point of getting a reference if you aren't getting an idea of how the person works? I would want to know if the person is a good worker, shows up on time, or if they are a tardy, lazy, loser. That seems to be what my brother keeps training in. He is back on 12 hour days because of a no call, no show that has only been working for 2 months. He is a yard guy for GE & all he does is move trailers all day from dock to parking lot. They can not keep anyone else doing this job which is not that hard. He has trained 10 people in the past 3 months & they finally hired this guy who was now fired for not showing up 2 days in a row.

So maybe if you put LOSER on your application somewhere you will get a job quicker. Seems like the only people that are hired around here anymore.

I feel your pain. I have worked as a high performing Data Analyst for 7 years in the same company. But we were recently aquired and I got a real butt head for a manager. I never even sat down with him nor said a word to him, much less an ill word.

The first day he sat in his office he put me on a Corrective Action Plan for performance. The initial CAP was for 30 days then they escalated it for 60 days and if I mess up I go on a final which will end in termination. However, while on the CAP they can fire me at will, at any time of day.

So how's that for having someone backed in a corner? The jerk makes up stuff about me and nit-picks anything I do, no matter how petty. This week he hounded me over my emails. He said they were'nt clear for a "lay man" to read. BUT he sends ME emails with misspelled words and grammar errors. This is really tough.

And for me I am contiplating how I am going to overcome this FELON on my work record if I get fired. It's tough to do.

I have advice for people in business and/or professional positions. Do not stay until you are tenure. Business is now finding ways to remove tenure and find someone to do your job for a lot less. And in this job market they can; especially computers.

If the poster is young and can go back to school, I would NOT list the job and get the degree you are seeking. Being a student appears much differently to a potential employer than if you have been in the profession for a long period of time. You are in a much better situation than me.

And next time try to really check out your employer before you hire. Even if you don't get fired, working in a hostile work environment will crack your mind. I promise. It's not worth it. Getting fired was probably the best thing that happened to you.
