Yep, you have a root maggot problem. I do too! The last 2 or 3 years I have not been able to grow potatoes at all. Nor any untreated corn seeds. Whenever I till the soil or lay rows off to get ready to plant in, I can bend down with my head toward the ground and look over the newly tilled ground and I will see hundreds of fly's hovering over the fresh soil. Looking for a place to lay their egg(s).
One problem I think might be the problem is planting too early, but not sure. So I'm gonna plant a little bit later this year. Another thing I'm gonna try is to dust my tater seeds with 7 dust before covering them and then dust the soil above the seeds after covering them. Hopefully this will help solve my problem. But I am getting very tired of spending a bunch of money on tater seeds just to see them get infested with maggots. I use to save back tater seeds from the last years crop and plant them. I'll have to start all over again.
