How small is small? We've got one that will hold approx a 3 inch binder and last year bought another that will hold several pistols and some expensive jewelry and lots of coin (if we had such things to put in one, dh was thinking of storing tax papers and other papers in it). Small one is a Brinks, larger is Sentry. The Sentry was pretty expensive but we bought it because it was made in the US.

................I was looking into something with an interior volume of 1 cubic foot.....1 ft. x 1 ft. x 1 ft. , or maybe just a tad larger ! The sentry brand looks very well made and they run from $150 up too $250 or so ! I think I prefer a key rather than a combination cause I might forget it because I wouldn't be opening every day or so ! , thanks , fordy

You might consider anchoring it somehow. Some small safes are just picked up by thieves and taken home to open at their leisure.

I bought a large safe several years ago double door six feet high sixfeet wide and four feet deep. Walls six inchesthick had to move with a truck wrecker. Still have it and it is still only worth what I paid $1500 I keep tax records in it and the door is unlocked. Remember you can open any safe with a 22 caliber single shot gun. The crook puts the gun up to your ear and says open or I pull the trigger.

I bought my sentry safe at walmart for about $50... it's a little over a cubic foot interior, weighs 80 pounds, and has a combination lock.

Yup, there are definitely waterproof ones out there.
fordy - I'm planning on picking up one of these safes too, and have been looking for the same info you are. I think I'm gonna go with combination, or combination and key. Right now I'm leaning toward the SFW123DSB. It will hold everything I want to put in there, is heavy enough to not be carried away easily (especially once I add the bolt-down kit to it), and is small enough to put it in an easily concealable, yet still accessible area. It gets good reviews on Amazon, as well as on a couple other places I've checked.
Shadow - if you're only going to keep tax documents in there, why did you get one so large??? Also, "Remember you can open any safe with a 22 caliber single shot gun. The crook puts the gun up to your ear and says open or I pull the trigger."??? If the crook breaks into my house while I'm there, he's gonna be full of buck shot, so I don't think his 22 will cause too many problems at that point. If he breaks in when I'm not there, I highly doubt he's going to find the safe in the first place. Now, if it were the size of an entire closet, yeah, it might be a little more difficult to conceal...

If this is for documents or relatively small items you might consider buying a fire proof one and put your items into LokSaks which are HIGHLY recommened for waterproofing items.

A very reasonable price. The SFW123DSB that I referenced is $175 on Amazon, and is verified to provide 1 hour of fire protection to 1700 degrees (will protect paper, metals, jewelry, CDs, DVDs, memory sticks, etc.), and verified to provide water resistance for 24 hours when submerged in up to 8 inches of water.
So, it probably won't survive an incinerator, and it probably won't stay dry if it's fully submerged under water for an extended period, but for the average house fire and water from putting out said fire, that seems more than adequate.
