Smile Hello! So glad I found you all!

Hi all, just wanted to say hello. We are in the early planning stages of starting our own homestead and this site is an awesome resource. I'm looking forward to learning from all of you.

We live in Eastern WA and have 20 acres in Western MT where we plan to move in the next few years. We're starting slowly but hope to build a cabin this summer to make our visits to the property a little more hospitable.

My wife and i have seven kids and all the crazy schedules and bills that come along with them! But we love to get out in the peace and quiet. When it comes to homesteading we're as green as a pool table - but I'm already having fun doing my research and it looks like this community will be very helpful.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello.

Welcome.

A lot of newcomers seem not to have the initiative to use the "Search" function. Try that out - there's a lot more buried here than is immediately apparent, and the old hands get a bit bored with seeing the same questions over and over and over and...

Pay attention to anything in any forum that has been made a "Sticky". If the mods think it's worth putting right up front, then it will have a lot of value.

Take a look into every forum. They all have value, although sometimes it's social rather than concrete. Way down towards the bottom of the forums there's one called "Survival and Emergency Preparedness" - lot of good stuff there, and the ratio of sense to tinfoil hats is a lot higher than many other similar forums elsewhere. There's a lot of recognition that, while national and global crises are possible, the emergencies we will see are much more likely to be personal or local.

Welcome Cabin Boy. You are soon going to be starting an adventure of a lifetime. I do hope you, your wife and 7 children will all enjoy it. Be prepared for some disappointments as we never really know what type of land we've landed on and only have a vague idea of what we can do with it until we're actually there. Then it will take years to get it exactly the way you want it.

You'll get some great information in these Homesteading Today forums; and Wogglebug has started you out well already. Remember the only foolish question is one that was never asked. Also remember many here come from very different backgrounds with quite a variety of ways to express themselves. I encourage you to stay as objective as possible when what is said in posts upsets you. Much of the time it is never meant to do so.

We have some great moderators; so if ever you have questions pertaining to what they do here, I have no doubt they will do their best to respond to you efficiently. Also, though it is rare, there may be times when you believe an injustice has occurred (either within a "private message" or within a thread itself). If you are not able (for whatever reason) to tend to the situation, feel free to report this to the moderators.

I have been with this forum for many, many years and am still learning. It is fun to help others and even more fun when we get to see pictures of the place or the people or whatever is being discussed; so feel free to post those too.

Welcome to the forums. You'll gets lots of information, along with some BS, and you'll have to sort it out. You will meet hundreds of fine, friendly people here, and a couple of old grouches.....

Welcome!
As others have already alluded to, there are archives, stickied threads, and a boatload of knowledgeable folks on this board. Many have been here 10 years or more.

Grab a mug of your favorite beverage, find a comfy place to set for awhile, and soak up the education till your brain is overflowing. Repeat as necessary. Enjoy the forums, you'll figure all the characters out over time
