washing machine question

I wasn't sure where to post this..so please move if needed. I have a 3 year old Whirlpool front loading machine. Can someone tell me why my washer would be adding hot water to my cold water setting? I'm not normally in the laundry room once it starts filling but today I needed to add to the load...and the hot water was running....
Any ideas??

Mine has both a regular and a tap water cold setting. I think that the regular old cycle is a tad warmer than the tap water one. Soap cleans better if it's not cooooold.

Sounds like your water selection dial is not working.

Did you switch the water hoses?

Cold water setting- We don't know if that is only cold or a mix. If it's only cold then maybe the dial. If it's a mix then shut the infeed water off remove the hot and cold hoses and look at the water inlet filter screens, the cold may be clogged.
If your washer does a mix of hot and cold for the cold water setting just shoot it for not doing what it says it will do.
Just kidding.
If your washer does a mix of hot and cold for the cold water setting the solenoid for the hotwater valve which is usually on the inside of the washer,, attached to where you hook the hoses, may be dead. How to tell? set the washer to hot water only and see if it puts hot water in the tub.

Switcing the hoses should help you draw some conclusions.

You can turn off the HW valve as needed as a "work around".

Ditto! Same with ours. The regular setting moderates the cold water with a little hot. It still comes out cold but not Ice-cold. The other setting puts out pure ice-cold water. I use the moderated setting so the detergent works better. It's cold enough that it doesn't hurt the Fabrics either.

Thanks everyone, our washer doesn't have the two cold water settings. Since we are on a well, and in Northern Ontario and it's winter...I guess our cold water is too cold. Given that today is supposed to be +12C - winter won't be here much longer!
