Free US geodesic maps
This is kinda cool - The U.S. geodesic survey was paid by taxpayer dollars and although you can buy them, the information in them isn't restricted by copyright and can be used freely. This site allows you to download the various maps as tiff image files. They are about 7 megs in size each. You will want to RIGHT-click on the tif selection and select download. You can then open the file in photoshop or gimp when you get it in your download folder.

Google maps and many of the online maps are primarily massaged data from the geodesic maps. I find older ones useful in historical research. They might be a little slower to access and harder to use, but the information is much more reliable.
