Saw a very strange looking animal tonight.
And I was wondering if anyone could help possibly identify it.
I'm sorry I don't have a picture, but I only saw it for a few seconds driving home and was trying not to run over it, lol.
But I can describe it.
It was about 1 foot long with VERY short legs maybe a few inches. The hair was solid black and long, 3-4 in. long and was fluffy, not laid down.
Now this sounds like a member of the weasel family and I've seen most of them either in the wild or pictures.......but the tail was like a possum, about 6 inches long and hairless.
It moved like a mink, weasel or even a fast skunk, kind of hoppity-bouncing.
I know it wasn't an otter or beaver, those I've seen around here. (NC mountains BTW)
I wish I could have seen the head but it was heading diagonally away from me.
I know you can only guess, but I don't have a clue?

You know, I guess anything is possible. A rat crossed with a long-haired Dachshund would be an accurate description.
You're starting to scare me now! LOL

muskrat fits your description, though most are a real dark brown and not exactly black...but if it was night, that could account for that. Also most muskrats are a little longer than a foot...maybe a foot and a half, but this might have been a young one. Were you near a stream or a lake? They stick pretty close to water.

I say muskrat simply because I don't think nutria occur up there. Google both and see what you think.

Possums around here come in a huge range of colors. I have seen them from white to almost black and everything in between. It may have been a black possum.

We're a lot farther north than you - middle Oregon - and we have a superabundance of nutria. A young one in a hurry might move like that, and when they're dry, they're fluffy, very dark brown and shiny, and have a naked tail. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find one crossing the road here.

Not a 100 % answer but highest percentage would be muskrat. Could be a young nutria if you have them in your area. Or its even possible that it was a mink with an enjuried or scarred tail.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, we have muskrats, even a couple on that bend of the road.
I would have recognized one of those. I'm gonna look up this nutria thing and see if it looks like it.
Thank you.
