Seed corn has been processed for seed. The germination has to be tested along with the variety. You can not get seed from anywhere it has to be grown for seed. How would you like it for the seed not to sprout or have another variety in it?

How much does a bushel of corn weigh? I googled it, it's about 56 pounds, so less than .75 per pound. Is that high? I remember I bought a packet of Bloody Butcher several years ago, probably 4 ounces, and I paid a few bucks for it. I know it's not the same, but I'm just askin.

Look at it this way, if they can sell it for that so can you. There is no great trick to growing OP corn for seed. Raise your own and sell seed next year.

Partly because of drought conditions last year that cut the supply. http://www.agriculture.com/news/busi...ming_5-ar21440

And is it any higher than this? By the seed population you can plant per acre?

And remember, you are buying a lower volume corn than conventional or hybrid. Prices can get higher for small lots.

that is pretty cheap.
hybrids are running 100 to 160 a bag and that's less than a bushel
RR seed is better than 200

Because OP corn is a lot less labor intensive. With hybrids the stalks need to be detasseled. OP corn is pretty much just corn. If you grow OP corn, and can keep it isolated enough that there is no cross pollination with hybrid seed, you have you next years seed right there.

I KNOW OP corn is, as a whole cheaper. What im trying to say, is ALOT of places, Take Shumways for example. There seed is well over double $40.

By the way, They called back and shipping would be $22 a bag.

Hybred field corn seed is selling for $270 to $350 for a bag of 80,000 seeds. They weigh much less than a bushel of corn. Thats going to cost about $100 per acre for the seed alone. Pay $200 cash rent and $200 for a bit of fertilizer plus anhydrous and roundup. Diesel fuel and equipment expense also.
How much yield would it take to break even with $6. corn with a moisture dock or dryer expense.
I can't think of many people more opptomistic that a farmer.

If what you grow won't sprout and grow you can have it.

I hate to tell you. But my grandad, and dad, when he was young, And likely Ole Vets dad and grandad, And Windy in Kans RIP dad and grandad, ALL picked their corn for next year out of the field as they picked and husked ir. They would carry a box or a gunny sack hooked to the wagon, and when they saw an good ear, on a good stalk they would save it. Then come winter, they would take those ears and cut the butts and points off and shell the centers, and that was there seed for the comeing year. Maybe they might buy a bu of new seed corn sos the old had something to regenerate, or revigorate with, Most times they didnt.
