Value or Garden Land

I am considering offering the use of my garden spot that is about 30 X 100 feet. It could be larger than that, but the young guy down the road made a swipe with the field tractor to till it up and that was the width of the disk.

What I want in return is some help with bits of fencing (not long runs) and some fix up on some out buildings. There is rural water and a well here. I want it to be fair on both ends of the deal, and just not sure how much "work" the use of the garden is worth. Someone that knows what they are doing could probably get the fix up work done in a day or two.

The garden area has been used in past years and I was told someone had a truck garden there once. It is productive ground, but I am sure could use some building up. There is a barn full to be cleaned out that would help with that. LOL

I have thought of the negative possibilities and am really sitting on the fence with this, just hate to see the land just set growing weeds and really need some help with the fix up.

You'd be better with something informal with friends rather than a formal rental situation.

Alice, I agree, but have explored that to a dead end. They either have gardens, don't want any or are too far away. And most of the locals have so much land that my dab is worthless to them. Oh well, if I can get some fence up, the geese and chickens can keep it mowed.

Boy, I hate to say it, but most of the situations I have seen is that someone starts out with a Spring fever to plant all sorts of things, then abandons it about July when the heat and weeds take over......and those people aren't interested in working out in the heat and sun to help you pay the rent on it. Anyone experienced with a garden already has his/her own location, and may have a lot larger area, besides. Don't mean to sound discouraging, but I think you probably will have to hire someone.....my own opinion. That rare person you are looking for is, well, rare.

I'd think that most people who want a garden would have one at their own places. If they don't have garden room they stand a good chance at being city people who wouldn't really know how to do the things you want. I also think that the cost of renting gardening space would be far less than fixing fences and other farm work.

In the city I live in there are 2 community gardens. One is used to grow food for homeless people. The second is raised bed planter rentals. 4x8 for $25 a year. In a city with over 150k people they maybe rent out 15 plots a year with room for over 100. There just isn't much demand.

Just a thought, is there a college or university nearby? Possibly a student in Agriculture dept/horticulture would be interested. I know when I was in college, way on back there, that people with land around town would rent exta houses to students and include use of garden space/barn/stalls and pasture.

I had an arrangement with a local family farm that lasted for years . I got the garden space , all the manure I wanted and did some chores for the priviledge. Doesnt hurt to ask around~ Vickie

if you are close enough to city people offer it as shares..not sure how many shares you could get out of a 30 x 100 feet, but maybe 4??

each 30 x 25..that isn't very big but at least people would be able to take care of what they put in.

I would put rules in that they cannot use chemicals though..unless you want poisons on your property..

give it a try, get the money up front though so if they walk away you aren't getting hurt
