How do you check a generator on a tractor

that is I can't find my meter so when you take the ground cable off it sparks real bad . Key on or off does not matter . If you place a wrench close to the tractor when it is running the wrenck sticks to the generator

I'd say it is charging then But if it sparks with the key off you got something on or the regulator is sticking

I usually just get the rig running and pull the ground battery cable off.. if it keeps running your charging system is working.... if not there is a problem somewhere. A wrench "sticking" to the generator while running tells me that your field windings are working properly. The sparking across the battery terminal to cable with the key off tells me that you have a heavy current draw somewhere that is NOT proper. Either a short in the V regulator or a wire shorted out somewhere.
