New Chicken Coop Adventure

We havent had chickens yet since retiring and moving to the farm but I kept promising the Mrs and this year we are finally getting going. We got a screaming deal on this coop and are just getting it set up. It will have electricity, we have a frost free hydrant next to it, the bottom will be wrapped with heavy hardware cloth, then a couple inches of #1 gravel then dirt to try and help keep out predators.....then Friday we go to the Cackle Hatchery open house. I figure with all the time and money spent we will begin to see a return on our investment in ...oh...say 2028. But we are enjoying it.

Love it!

We're getting ready to start again with chickens and I'm sure my hubby will overdo, too!

Too many chores, so I gave away my chickens last fall-and despite my having Fort Knox for my chickens, I drool over your new chicken house! Do hope its predator proof

Thanks everyone. We know nothing about chickens but have read the book "Raising Chickens for Dummies" and we have a lot of enthusiasm! We often feel like we are living out our fantasies and having chickens has been part of our simple life dreams.

We anchored the coop with 3 foot ground anchors screwed into the ground and through bolted to the coop runners. We then added additional pressure treated wood around the perimiter and are laying heavy hardware cloth on the ground and fastened to the perimeter wood, followed by a couple inches of #1 gravel, then dirt on top of that for the chickens. It wont be completely predator proof but whatever makes it through that will have earned a meal!

And finally, my appologies to Mamita's husband!

Wow! That's a nice coop! I bet you'll have a great time at the hatchery, too.

nice...I'm jealous and not just the chicken coop...the kubota as well.

Hey Salmonslayer...Just checked out your blog...very nice. I'm assuming that photo at the top of your blog is your place. Tell me about the little stone hut with the bowed roof, that has the four pane window at the top. Did you build it? What do you use it for? It looks really nice.

Thanks, that photo at the top of the blog is the back of our house that overlooks the barnyard. That lap siding is hardiplank we put up and it covers up old and extremely ugly asbestos shingles. The small building is actually a well house that was built in 1938 and we are in the process of renovating it (re-tuck pointing the mortar, new windows, new roof tin etc.). It has a functioning well in it but we use it mostly for storage of flammables and explosives.....the walls are 2 feet thick. The place is a work in progress and was uninhabitable when we bought the place.

RHAIG9 - There are some interior pics in our most recent blog entry but if you need pictures of something specific let me know and I will take them and send them to you. We spent the day today modifying the coop and getting it ready for its eventual inhabitants.

Hi, when is the open house at Cackle Hatchery? I plan to go get chicks there as soon as coop is built or bought, but it would be a nice day trip to attend.

Now THAT's what I call a chicken coop! I'm planning on redoing mine a little this summer and I believe I'll shamelessly steal some of those ideas.

Its was this weekend but they are real accomodating folks there and I doubt you would have too much trouble getting a walk through. I was fascinated how they ship the peeps through the mail...I always thought there was more to it.
