hummingbird patrol
so far in my area of zone 6 still no hummingbirds - let's hear it from all the observation posts in zones 7, 8, 9 and 10 - have you seen the little buggers yet?

Had the first male hummer show up saturday, have plenty of flowers blooming for them, but have not decided to put out feeders just yet. We usually wind up with at least 100 or so in the summer. We are in zone 8. B Adams

purple martins have arrived to zone 7, no hummingbirds yet, however.

Zone 7 in VA No sign of hummers yet. Just as well it was 70 on sat and snowed yesterday. It's 14 degrees now. Those birds are better at knowing when spring is here than all the meteorologists.

Zone 9 here, saw the first ones on Saturday, heard it before I saw it.
That buzzing sound of wings, nothing else like it!

Well my gang of usuals are very late, should have been here two weeks ago. So far there is only one single bird. Guess they're having too much fun wherever they are!! Zone 7 here.

 Well, the male rufous hummers arrive first and the first one was at my feeders about 12 days ago...by that ridiculous USDA zone hardiness map we are about 8a...on the much more accurate(for those of us in the West)map of the Sunset Western Garden Book we are zone 6. The females are just now showing up. In another 2 weeks or so the tiny little calliope hummers will show up and then "there goes the neighborhood!" LOL

Hey everyone I have been reading the board for a long time now, but this is my first post been reading a lot.
I had something happing to me this winter that I am very excited about and sense you all are talking about Hummingbirds I thought I would shear it with you.
My home is in Birmingham Alabama and I had the very good luck to have several Hummingbirds winter over with my wife and I.
I have documented by the Hummingbird Study Group (Mr. Bob Sargent) located in Clay, Alabama. We had at least one of the flowing birds stay with us this winter, Rufous, Allen’s, and Calliope he was not able to band these birds but was able to identify them. He was able to capture and band one Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (Immature male #5000N07534 one Jan 13, 2004) this is very rare and has never been seen before. We had a cold winter hear this bird stayed with us all winter and is steel hear I had to bring in the feeder at night because of freezing temp. At night.
I just thought some of you might like to hear about it.

Hi all Zone 5 here and have yet to see a hummer, feeders have been up for about a week, and usually they beat me to it. We have been having great weather high 50's to mid 60's for a few weeks but also had high winds--wonder if that slowed them down? I think we usually get Annas Hummingbirds and Rufous if I remember right. Can't wait to see them, even though they chase me down when I get behind in their feeders.

Here at our place (zone 5), we don't usually expect them until mid-may. I don't really have to worry about remembering to put the feeders up, though. If I'm late, the little boys (boys always seem to arrive first) buzz up to the window and look in at me as if to say, "HEY LADY! We're hungry here!". They must have a heck of a memory!

Zone 7 (NW MS) and I haven't seen one yet, but don't usually see them until about June because they're all over at my neighbor's house enjoying her massive flower beds and feeder!

Zone 8b - north Florida. We saw our first of the season about 1 week ago. He buzzed me several times as our feeder is right next to the rabbit cage.

Zone 8 just north of Houston
There were two here yesterday. Lots of crimson clover and other flowers blooming. I need to fill my feeder.
