Eye in the sky? So what do you think it is ... ?
Sometimes you see the strangest things in the sky. Today I was up on a mountain (at Vancouver) taking pictures of the fog bank that was rolling in over the ocean from the north. The sun was sinking in the west and there was a big black cloud above coming in from the south about to cover the sun. I spotted this bright colorful reflection in the sky hovering in place over the ocean and was able to get a picture of it. The picture was taken from quite a distance so it has been cropped at the sides to make it bigger so you can get a better look at what I could see.

LOL.
I think it was probably an approaching plane reflecting light from the sun but there was so much vapour in the air it created an aura around it. It just looked so odd. I watched it for awhile but never could see what was causing it.

A plane? Ummmm.... Sure, if that's what you have to tell yourself to be able to sleep at night! *lol*
I have no idea what that is. But I wouldn't guess a plane. I don't see an aura. I see 3 definite rings.

I tend to agree with the sun dog as a likely suspect, but there are other atmospheric effects I am at a loss to explain. We were going from Ft. Lauderdale to Ft. Myers one day a few years ago and there was something similar to a sun dog at a very low altitude that followed along beside us for at least fifty miles.

E.T. was on last night... given the time difference it must have been just when he was phoning home.

We watched it for about 2 minutes after it was first spotted and took several pictures of it. It seemed to not be moving, just hovering there above the Georgia Straight which is about 30 miles away from where we were standing on the mountain. The picture above is one of 20 pix that were taken, that one I posted captured the phenomenon most fully and in clearest detail. Then that big black cloud you see at the top of the picture moved in and completely covered the sun so there wasn't even any reflection of the sun on the water and fog bank and the reflection of the object (or whatever it was) in the sky faded away and we couldn't see anything there.
Paquebot and Harry, it wasn't a sun dog. We get thousands of sundogs here, we see them nearly every day because there is always some water vapour and ice crystals in the sky in this location and they usually are higher up and closer to the clouds and sun. There is never a time when there isn't vapour and a few clouds in the sky above Vancouver and the Fraser Valley lower mainland, even on the brightest, hottest, sunniest days. This accounts for the peculiar greenish-yellow shade you see in the sky in that picture and vapour provides for some fabulous low horizon sunset pictures with astounding colors. It's a photogs dream for taking pictures of sundogs here. The sundogs we see here don't look anything like whatever that was. We've taken pictures of sundogs, double sundogs, pillers and full rainbows around the sun and moon. Never seen anything before where the colors were separated in such definable rings as there was around this thing instead of colors shading and blending together.
So it was peculiar and fun to watch while it lasted. Then we continued to watch the fog bank roll in. If you look closely you can see the humps and billows of the fog coming in across the water.

Google -sky spirals, or spirals in the sky or something similar. There are a lot of youtube vidoes of these odds things being seen all over the world. Remember the one that made the news from norway a year or two ago. Kinda odd........

Since this was at sunset, the light had to be either coming from the sun through a prism system or from its own source. The sun would have been behind it and thus not able to be reflected unless it were deep into outer space.

That would be true if they didn't see it with the naked eye as well
