It's funny that you posted this. I was at an auction this past week and there was a homemade stick that they said was for measuring logs. It wasn't as long as yours, and I couldn't figure out the numbers on as there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to them. I went to the site just now and they have already taken the pictures down. It sold for $12.50.

I did find this site. It may have the answer you want.

I am a frequent lurker here and enjoy checking out this site a few times a week.

Could it be a "biltmore stick"? That's what they are called in my area which is woodsy, central Michigan. Does not look quite like the one I used to use many years ago. Yours is quite detailed with the smooth handle and pointer thingy on the far end.

They are commonly called a tally stick in my neck of the woods.

I believe the numbers relate to the board feet of lumber per foot of log length, estimated by gauging the butt end of the log.

I read that the metal piece hooks on the side of the log, and using your finger
on the rule to get the width. Three sets of numbers are for 3 different lengths like,
12, 14, & 16', so where your finger is at the width mark is the estimated board footage.
They had 3 of these up for auction and one person bought the 2 shortest ones, so
I ended up with this one.

Got it, they are quite pricey new, any ideas of what this long one would be worth?
