Wild Hogs in the Garden----Question
Well I knew my neighbor had been getting pictures of wild hogs on his deer camera and my hope is they would not find my garden. Well friday I ride by my garden and 3 hogs were in it. They had just walked into it when I rode up. I could tell this because of their tracks. This is the first time I have had a hog in it. For 2 days now they have not been back in my garden. Well I built a live catch trap and baited it this afternoon about 150 yards from my garden but in a narrow head of woods that I feel the hogs would walk through coming to my garden. I put 30lb of corn and a arm full of turnips in the trap.
My question is if I get lucky enough to catch a wild hog or shoot one(always packing a gun every trip by the garden)------what would YOU do with the Meat?? Thanks

It makes awesome sausage. When DH took a feral sow, we slow roasted the ribs in the crock pot. Made some pork chop type cuts with the back strap and tenderloin and then made sausage with the rest of it. Some say feral hog is too lean for sausage and that it's better to add fat into it, we couldn't find any at the time and kept it lean. Honestly, I liked it much better lean. Best sausage I've ever had, even if we had to hand grind it. LOL

Unless it is a boar I would eat it. If it is a boar and caught it I would castrate it then eat it.

Sows and shoats, eat em. Boar hog? Dog food. Wouldn't bother with castrating a grown boar, and waiting six months for the meat to clear up.... corn is mighty dang expensive, and there's an unlimited supply of good eating wild hogs, to fool with the inedible ones.
Of course, if you like rare kidneys, you'd 'love' boar meat.

What Texican said - only but cook well, even the dog food. There's a strong chance the feral hogs will have parasites. In that respect, younger is better. Trichinosis is not the only possible parasite, but it is nasty.

Be careful what you wish for, ronbre. In Missouri, feral hogs are "shoot on sight" year 'round because they are so destructive and prolific.

Shoot the boar, render the lard, and use it to fry carp.

I was going to say, watch your mouth!
Actually we do/did have wild hogs in Michigan and they were becoming a problem which is why the state made the hunting ranches that import them illegal. Because they can't keep 'em in. The hurt those hogs cause isn't worth all the "free" meat in the world. No such thing as a free lunch, especially not from wild hogs.

You might want to check the laws in your area. Around here it is illegal to transport live feral hogs. Shoot em and eat em!

Sure, you can eat em..... there's a whole lotta organic matter on this planet, all of which you 'can' eat... if your starving and don't have any options, go for it. If you have any tastebuds whatsoever, there's a few things I'd pass on... personally I have a distaste for anything remotely tasting or smelling like urine.
The world has come to an end... If I haven't eaten in a month, and there's no chance of finding other food, and it's boar meat or long pork............... well, we'll go with boar...

Not all come from Hunting ranches like around here.Farm Hogs were turned lose and reverted back to their Wild State.Their the only animal I know that will make such a dramatic change in such a short time.
