4.5 days of genuine homesteading bliss!

Missed you guys. We just had our power restored after nearly 5 days. The PacNW was socked with snow, then ice, then wind. Since mid day, Weds. we've been without amenities like water, central heat, news and transportation, and phone service was intermittent.

Fortunately, we have a wood stove, so were able to remain warm, cook, melt and boil snow. We stock candles, batteries for a radio and 5 gal buckets of water for the animals (though our waterfowl desperately missed their kiddie pools as much as we missed brewed coffee). It's remarkably like camping inside your own home...still, it's a real grind having to haul buckets, bathe in a basin, read by candle light, boil snow to wash dishes, pack and re-pack our food with ice and snow to keep from spoiling, cook over uneven heat, and then there's the whole lack of bathroom thing .

I know many of you have a lifestyle closer to our experience, and we're no softies. The longest we've endured is ten days without power, but for some reason, this time it seemed longer. It certainly gives us an appreciation for what we have, and respect for the endurance of our great grandmothers.

(I did attempt to bake biscuits in the wood stove over coals. Kinda worked. they were burnt on the bottom, but edible). After all of it though, we're glad to be back!

Should we check back with you in about 9 months? You have to keep warm and entertained.

It's a real eye-opening experience, isn't it? Sort of shows you where the holes in your preps are. Glad you're all safe and sound, and back with us.

Being without electricity is a great way to practice your preparedness.

No reason to do without coffee! Get a French Press coffee maker - just put the coffee in the cylinder, add boiling water, press the seive down and it's the best tasting coffee you can make. Maybe also start storing water in jugs to avoid melting snow, or use the melted snow to flush.

to me, the elec. lights and stove are nice but ooooh, HOT running water is heaven! still being amused at that after the camper situation which was years ago! and a washing machine, these are amazing things. some days I just give thanks for these things, maybe it sounds lame, but look how nice those things are!

I don't know that I would call it bliss when our power went out. We did manage with using the snow for refrigeration and the wood stove for heat. I missed internet, DH's cpap, and real lights.

Most of Thursday was spent shoveling snow if there weren't any trees on that section of driveway and listening to the branches fall. We have about 6 of the junk trees down and a bunch of large branches but no damage to the house or vehicles.

Well Pinky, I was being a bit tongue in cheek there. No it was not blissful. I missed not being able to do the laundry and take a shower!!! I soil outdoor clothes so fast and wash them so frequently. Irritating that the electric company will offer $50 if you go without power for 5 days. Really? $50? That wouldn't even cover the cost of the condiments etc that I now should replace. We didn't lose much else - except that we flew through wood. We only stocked up 8 cord to get through winter. Without the 'blower' on our wood stove, we burn much more to maintain a liveable temp.

Yeah we sure went through the wood too. A health club went in near here and they had a free 1 week trial...a good way to get a shower

I hate to be with out electric so when I was out of power for 10 days I bought a generator to power the whole house. It comes on when the power goes out and runs until it comes back on all automatically. I know it will never do for TSHTF but in the mean time it sure is nice expectantly to pump the water.
